A fantastic walk, an interesting spectacle to see climate change in action, and above all - free. We loved the walk to the glacier and the valley bottom is just superb. Geology in action in front of you - rock falls, streams, carving glaciers - WOW. Spend a few hours - enjoy the scenery.

Great outdoors visit. Lots of walks and beautiful forest. Glaciers are worth a visit - trek or helicopter. Quad bike trip is fun. Take sandfly repellant and a jacket :)

Having decided that one helicopter activity was enough, we opted to walk to the foot of the glacier. Not as dramatic as landing on it, I'm sure, but we knew we were never going to fit everything into our trip. The walk is easy enough and pretty level. The scenery is also nice, with the river rushing by, waterfalls etc.

while it is too bad about the glacier not being safe to approach, there was still loads of fun for me to be had.the valley is quite beautiful and there are many informational signs all around the place. I had loads of fun climbing on the rocks in the valley and running around the waterfalls that are in the area.... More

The glacier has receded a lot in the last few years and you can only see it from very far away, unless of course you take the helicopter ride up to the top of the glacier. Its global warming that has caused the glacier to have receded so much, very disappointing. Its a long walk from the parking lot to... More

Although the weather was overcast we had a great time here. Firstly, we took the Sentinel Rock walk, a short climb on a good path to a viewing platform, with quite good views of the glacier, although from a fair distance away. We decided that was the weather was holding, we would also do the walk to the glacier face.... More

While the Franz Josef (and Fox) Glacier(s) are retreating considerably every year, walking to the glacier face is still quite a rewarding experience. More tourists are now opting for the helicopter fly over to get a better view of the glacier and also to land on the snow. We did both - and loved them equally. With well marked signage... More

We stayed one night in Franz Josef and it has a good selection of restaurants and cafes, and accomodation options. We had beautiful weather and headed out to the glacier early morning. It's a quick drive from the village and an easy and fun walk that takes about 30-40mins to the viewing area. The terrain itself is great to walk... More

Tour guides very informative about entire area. Wish hike was longer but in groups you have to wait for slowest hiker...

It's what everybody comes here for and for good reason. Short helicopter ride swooping over the glacier and two hour helihike through ice caves and watching the snow avalanches.
