Yet another Sport highlight in NZ. Glacier hiking. From the sunny town nearby, helicopter onto the glacier. spikes on, walk for about an hour on top of it in a group of about 20 people(grandmothers included in group). cool place, and there are some extra sights along the way such as climbing through a naturally-formed ice-cave..

We took the heli - hike - which meant we were transported by helicopter onto the glacier and then spent 3 hours on and amongst the ice. I would recommend this to anyone planning to make the fairly long journey to Franz Josef. We were made very welcome and assisted by the reception staff, fitted out with clean clothing and... More

an amazing experience, so glad I did it and the expense of a helicopter flight onto the glacier itself was definitely worth the price tag.

We all really enjoyed our visit to see Franz Josef glacier. It was a pretty long walk (especially noticeable after having done Fox Glacier the same day!) but great. While Fox Glacier was probably more stunning, you should walk up to both if in the area!

We were unsure whether we should just hike to the glacier or pay for one of the official tours. I'm so glad we hired Franz Josef Glacier Guides...it's the only way to get onto the glacier and the experience is unreal! We got to crawl through tiny holes in the glaciers and pass through narrow ice caves. Definitely worth the... More

Walking on the actual glacier. Excellent guide who managed our group with expertise and gave us great confidence. Our only problem was the tour was 40 mins late leaving waiting for late comers, which made us almost miss getting onto the Haast Pass that day. We made it by 10 minutes and without lunch! No where were there any notices... More

I did 8h climbing the glacier wiyh the guide. It was a rainy day! But that wasn't really a problem, just getting wet completely. It was my first experience on a glacier If you like adventures just do it. The colours are amazing, sometimes it seems to be in an unreal world. Don't miss to do it!

Awesome day out. Got all geared-up with supplied equipment before we left. Don't avoid this trip if you don't have all the outdoor gear. They'll give you everything you need. Short, but good chopper trip up to the landing spot. Jag was our guide, and he was great. We felt safe and under control the whole time. It's not a... More

Since visiting several years ago the glacier has really retreated up the valley. The walk is relatively easy but certainly longer than it used to be. It is still worth taking the walk if you haven't seen the glacier before, but if you have seen it before, then it is a little dissapointing.
