We had a fun return trip to Franz Josef and on our 4th day of trying we finally got our helicopter landing on top of the world. I love going remote away from the crowds and apart from the foot prints of the earlier group it was pure heaven. As soon as we got back it started raining again! The... More

Frans Josef Village is much smaller than we imagined. However the Helicopter flight up the glacier and the walk to the glacier later in the afternoon was an excellent way to explore the area. For those with more time and money a visit to the greenstone shop is a must. Happy Travelling

Honestly. How two whole towns make their living off the back of these eyesores is beyond me. Visit these places at your own risk. Boring and disappointing in equal measure.

First they flew us with helicopter for about 10 minutes. Then they drop us for about 2 hours for wonderful experience on ice and snow. Then they flew us back. Nice view and really fun thing to do.

In my life time I saw quite a few glaciers disappearing. Three years ago one can actually touch the glacier of Franz Josef but now one has to walk for about 45 minutes to see it. We had a good weather window for about two hours. We took the shuttle (R/T for $12.50 NZ. From the car park it is... More

With so much to see here, the valley walk that takes you upto the glacier face (250meters away) is a very pleasant walk. Mostly flat so very doable for those with younger or older family members. Well worth it. Round trip is posted around 1hr and 30mins but easy to do it in an hour if you're fit.

Went to FJ Glacier about 15 years ago, I went again this year and it is still a great place to visit but I do think it is getting smaller. Global warming is taking its toll. Loved the hike anyways and I have to say they provided me with way better shoes now than in the nineties.

This is quite simply amazing. We took te helicopter ride up and landed on the snow. In shorts. In the middle of summer. I reckon it has to be up there in my top 5 things I've ever done. This made our 4 week trip round New Zealand!

I am someone who loves to trek, but this was one hell of a trekking experience, through a jungle, rocks, and then hard ice. The ice part was most difficult and is not recommended for the faint hearted. When given a choice of group to trek with, go with the medium / slow pace (I made the mistake of joining... More
