The walk to the glacier is busy but not too taxing. There is plenty to see on the way, give yourself time to enjoy the beauty of this place. Pack drinks, snacks etc and wear comfortable shoes, sneakers are fine. It is cooler up near the Glacier even in warm weather so you may need a jacket. There are a... More

We utilized Franz Josef Glacier Guides to take us up to the Glacier via Helicopter for about a three hour trek up/down the glacier with a guide. Each group is about a dozen people in total (only 6 in the helicopter at a time), They provide the essential equipment/outside clothing/ socks/ boots/ gloves/ crampons/etc. The trips to the glacier include... The helicopter ride was stupendous! All the copters go to the same place, so take your pick. We could not believe how enormous the glacier is as you keep approaching and approaching. Dots on the ground turned out to be other tourists! We walked around a bit. Photo op. But on the ride back we saw huge waterfall. Next day... More

You should visit this place only if you also would like to do skydiving. Glacier trek is average, you'll get the real feel of glacier if you go via the helicopter.

Glacier Helicopters flew me over the Franz Josef, and what a ride! We didn't get to land because the weather was closing in, but it was still one of my most memorable experiences.

Very nice walk and great views of the glacier. Easier and better views than Fox Glacier. Easy parking, easy to find, worth the effort and the drive.

More scenic and bigger than Fox, they are both in retreat though. I've been to glaciers in South America before so this wasn't quite as impressive for me, but still worth coming.

To see a glacier almost at sea level, to get reasonably close to it, to feel the chill coming off it, and to pick up small bits of jade that it has spat out over time, is just the most sensational feeling. It is hard from a photo to appreciate the sheer size of the thing, nor the height that... More

Did not wish to step foot on the glacier as this all adds up to degrading it - climate change is doing enough of that. Very busy carpark but a lovely spot. Signposts could be slightly improved

The glacier walk was full of anticipation and Franz didn't disappoint. It's receding fast which is sad and to be safe access is restricted to the terminal face. The constant thump of helicopters is a turn off.
