This involves a bit of a hike to access the best view of the glacier from ground level, but the 90 minute journey is worth it. Definitely best seen on a clear day (which is wasn't for very long we were there, but should be done anyway). The first part of the walk is on good level paths at the... More

My friend and I wanted to see the glacier but didn't want to pay for the helicopter hike. Our host recommended the glacier valley walk. We weren't expecting much since we knew you couldn't actually walk on the glacier, but we were pleasantly surprised - the valley is truly beautiful. It had rained that morning, so the waterfalls were in... More

The Franz Joseph glacier is very popular with bus tours. The glacier itself is a fraction of its former size. There is an hour and a half's return walk to get to within 250 yards of the ice front. Views are limited. We walked to the Fox Glacier- a better walk, a better view, with more ice. We have walked... More

This is certainly unusual, to see glacier amidst trees! An easy walk to the foothill of the glacier for a fantastic view. Regular helicopter flights to see the glacier really up close.

We enjoyed the 1.5hour return walk out to the glacier but that made the anticipation even better. The glacier was magnificent, I don't reckon you could get much closer to raw nature if you tried and it is free. It's a west coast must do, also do the fox as well.

Appears a bit expensive however would make as a must do if you are in the area. The helicopter flight is an experience however the walk on the glacier is not tough and very very interesting - helped by a fantastic guide. The formations change daily as do the ice holes and attractions. The views are outstanding and as the... More

Went on helicopter flight to land on the glacier, amazing views of the mountains and two glaciers, also flew round mount Cook.

Expensive but a trip of a life time which simply has to be done. We did the Glacier and mount cook flight actually landing on the snow above the glacier. Magic!

It was the most unusual place we have ever visited. The hike in, takes about 30 minutes, was lush greenery and palm trees with ferns. Off in the distance was the glacier ice pack looming, with helicopters shuttling people all day long to and from it. We opted to do the hike and got close. Glad we took the telephoto... More

The glaciers are about a 90 minute walk in from the carpark. The walk is fairly easy to do and worth the effort. Get in early for a more tranquil experience before the helicopters start buzzing around.
