Great well-sign-posted walk but beware the river levels and avoid in bad weather. Take warm clothing, strong footwear and waterproof jacket. It is a waste of time if clouds are low - you won't see the glacier - and dangerous. This is a high altitude weather area despite being close the coast and there's a real risk of hypothermia in... These glaciers never fail to mesmerise me. They are worth visiting more than once as every time I go, they are different. Different weather conditions provide a different experience each time. It is interesting how they grow, or recede. The play of the light on them created beautiful or stormy effects depending on the day.

We walked to the the face of Franz Josef Glacier after our helicopter ride, in which we viewed both Glaciers and spent around 20 mins landed on top of what would have been Fox Glacier. Our helicopter view was on a spectacular clear blue sky morning ( It was fantastic and you could not appreciate the full splendor of the... More

We caught glimpses of the Glacier, but were not able to walk the distance to view it better as we both were on crutches. There should be facilities for people who can make the long walk.

Long walk through beautiful glaciated valley (plenty of waterfalls). The glacier has receeded up the mountain quite a way meaning the viewing area is quite far away from the terminal face. We thought that Fox glacier was the better of the two.

This is an amazing experience. The glacier is near enough the township of Franz Josef that it is possible to hike near it. For the best experience however, it is worth the time and money to hire a guide and either helicopter or 4x4 to the glacier. It is a young and fast moving glacier with different patterns of crevasses... More

Ice explorer hike was good. A little expensive - it left one a little underwhelmed for what you get. But the guides make it better. Alex was good fun and informed, I doubt I'd have enjoyed this as much if it wasn't for him(simply because the price is so extreme). The helicopter ride was the best thing about this day,... More

Our group did the heli-hike on a crystal clear day. Stunning scenery and a brilliantly organised trip make this a must visit. Kudos to our guide and the friendly staff in town.

The best part of my Franz Josef Glacier visit was the stunning walk to the terminal face. You get in to the river bed and walk amongst towering, dramatic landscapes. I was a little disappointed that you could not get a little closer to the terminal face, but this is because of safety issues which is understandable. There was also... More

Spent two nights in this town and it's just small, dead and boring. We didn't see the Franz Joseph glacier, but we did see the fox glacier which was okay for about 5 minutes. We stayed two nights in this town, leaving a full day to explore only to find ourselves doing laps of the town all day because there... More
