Never seen anything like it, it is spectacular. The whole town of Franz Josef seems to be engineered to extract money from you, which from our experience isn't typical of New Zealand. So don't park in the Heliport car park for $2, the iSite at the top of the town is free, if you can manage for fuel, wait until... More

Did both the Heli Hike and also walked the valley. Glacier hike was great, not a big deal but its not often you get a chance to walk on a glacier. The Valley hike was great and there are beautiful waterfalls.

It was pouring with rain, but not cold, we met some great people and shared the short hike to the glacier, beautiful scenic walk, up to the glacier which has sadly receded over time, so worth the effort! A must see. We didn't take the helicopter route as we felt it was too pricey!

The walk to the Glacier was very scenic and not very difficult (a bit steep at the end) but certainly achievable. Definitely take your camera, as well as the Glacier itself there are also waterfalls to view along the way. Would highly recommend!

Although not impressive by Alaska standards, this is really worthwhile place to visit. If you have to choose between this glacier and Fox Glacier, I would recommend Fox.

Definitely the best glacier to visit one your own. The walk towards it is beautiful and the same goes for the view in the end. About a 1,5 hour return walk from the parking lot but it is worth it!

This is one that you have to be willing to walk to in potentially rainy weather...the good news is that if the weather is bad you can see the glacier after only 5 minutes of walking. Overall this was a great experience. Bring your camera, water, and warm clothing. WARNING..There is no bathroom after your begin the walk and there... More

A 5km drive from Franz Josef village centre to the car park at the base of the gorge. An easy walk across the valley floor, then rising towards the base of the glacier - amazing views on the way and at the view point. Be sure to prepare for bad weather it can change very quickly.
