The beach has outstanding views and there is a great walk to the old gold mining area, but there is not much to see. There is an old Cemetery which is well worth a visit, with a lot of historical interest.

We cycled from Fox village - not for the faint hearted - and were a little disappointed that the beach was pebbly and shelved so steeply that only very confident swimmers could use it. The remains of the 19th century drilling gear was interesting but it is quite a trek for not a lot. Beware of sand flies. However we... More

After what seemed like a terrible drive along a track that went on and on, there was this wonderful beach and a little community. Lots of young people having a great time. We were so glad we had made the effort to complete the drive. The views back to the mountains were also incredible as the cloud had finally lifted.

We took the road to the beach, but be advised, at least half of the road is gravel! Took much longer to get there than we would have thought. Again, the weather was windy and cloudy, but it was interesting to be on a beach of the Tasman Sea! There were a lot of rock cairns that people had made...saw... More

Gillespies Beach is quite a trek to get to down a 12km bumpy track. The beach itself looked spectacular with smooth stones and uninterupted beauty. However, we were only able to stay for 10 minutes as we were bombarded by Sand Flys.

Upon leaving Lake Matheson you can turn left back to Fox Glacier and the main highway. We're glad we went right, and not just to the Mt Cook lookout, though that's pretty good too. It's a very scenic drive to Gillespie's Beach, slow and windy but the history and views make it so worth it. For one, because the angle... More

An interesting drive on a roughish road through the bush to a wild Tasman Sea beach. I thought it was worth the effort, call for a coffee at the Lake Cafe on the way.

It is worth traveling the road there. The view from the beach to the mountains is outstanding, as the beach is also.

It's great sunset view from beach while having beer on beach. But sandflies are terrible. My brother-in-law had more than 100 bites on his arms and legs!

Worth the ride to get there, lovely. When we were there it was raining and cold, but can imagine how wonderful it would be warm.
