The trip included a drive in the 4x4 and then a lovely walk through the native woodland (which is very LOTR-esque!) to reach the flames. Merve is very knowledgeable and told us lots about the flora, fauna and local history along the way. We paused a few times to look at the plants and birds, and even to taste the... More

It turned out it was the hottest day of the year that trip Sam! We nearly didn't come out of the stream gully as it was so nice and cool hiding in the ferns! So glad it was a highlight of NZ - thanks for the review. More

This tour isn't just about the flames. Merve gives you an entire history of the area as you take his Land Rover through public and private roads until you reach the beginning of the hike. Then, you tramp about a mile or two into the forest until you get to the flames, where Merve makes you pancakes! Really a pretty... More

Glad you enjoyed the whole tour. You are right - it is just as much about getting there as in seeing the Flames themselves. Thanks for the review Eric. More

We spent a fantastic 2 days at Murchison Lodge. The highlight of our stay was the trek through the bush to see the flames coming out of the earth. After a short drive of about 30 minutes we arrived at the start of the trek. Merv., our guide and his faithful dog Kali guided us safely to our destination. His... More

The flames are still burning even though we've had a lot of rain in the last couple of days! And they are getting ready to drill soon so hopefully they won't strike the source of the flames! yes, Kali likes posing for photos! Thanks for the review. More

Hop in Merv's LandRover leave the towns behind and get into New Zealand's "outback" for a fun, informative experience in natural wonders and beauty. Progress from main road to country lane to crossing farmer's fields and their cattle and sheep. You park beside a lovely stream to take to the trail that leads you into national forest. As you go... There is so much to learn about the forest - that's one of the great things about going up regularly - there is always something new to see or hear. So glad you were able to make the time to come on the walk with us - and happy that the pancakes were such a hit although to be honest,... More

Woohoooo the Flames were amazing, make the time to see this!! The tour wasn't 'ALL' about the Flames, even though it could be!! It combines all the talents and a wealth of knowledge from a great host, a pretty drive, an enchanting bush walk and then of course the Natural Flames. We were treated to billy tea and pancakes, which... More

We find it hard to express in words too and you are right - you can only 'get it' if you experience it! Thanks for the review... More

Merve is a great host, which when added to the beautiful scenery/bush and the flames themselves make for a fantastic experience. Yes it does take around 4 hours but considering the uniqueness of the flames it is well worth the time. Extremely good value.

We are often told that if the trip was less than four hours we would have more people doing it, but why rush a good thing? It makes it all the more special for getting there... More

This was an amazing experience that shouldn't be missed by any visitors to Murchison. The 4WD track, the bush walk and then the flames themselves, all with Merv's enthusiastic dialogue along the way added up to a most worthwhile way of spending time in this town. Add to this the yummy pancakes cooked while you wait and the cup of... More

Thanks for the review Mark - it was a pleasure to take you guys in. One of the joys of doing this trip is seeing people's expressions of amazement when they get there, and sharing the magic of the spot over a cup of tea. I always learn something every trip so it was great to swap anecdotes and bits... More

Merve took us on the Natural Flames Experience. The walk through the forest was already very interesting, with lots of information about the flora and fauna. The flames are really exciting, larger than I thought. And the pancakes were delicious!

Thanks Nienke. We used a duck egg for the mix the other day which made the pancakes even yellower than when we use our chicken eggs! More

As part of our stay at Murcheson Lodge, we had booked a half day trip to the natural flames. Merv, our host at the lodge also runs the flames trip, and has a wealth of knowledge about the area. The trip itself combines a 4WD ride to the DOC land, and then an hour walk through the native bush and... More

Thanks xbob. The flames have moved since you were there - they went up the bank a bit more! Then on a 35 degree day they were too hot to cook over but it has cooled off a bit now and they are looking good! More

Merv, the guide was very knowledgeable about the area, history birdlife and countryside. After about 1hr walk through bush/forest on an unformed track we were arrived at the flames, burning inn the forest for the past 100 years. Merv had carried the supplies and made us tea and pancakes (with local honey)cooked on the flames to set us up for... More
