Natural Flames is a gas seep in the midst of a valley near Murchison. This tour takes you on a 4WD track through some private land to the start of a track through the native bush (largely beech trees festooned with moss). The track is well maintained, but a bit rough in spots. At the end of the track, there... More

Thanks for your review Nix. Yes, we think we may be running a 'carbon negative' business if you add everything together! Especially if we can get some recycled 'chip-shop' oil to run the landrover on… More

During a very relaxing stay at the Murchison Lodge Merve passionately told us about the natural flames. We're very glad to have joined him on a tour to see this phenomenon with our own eyes. The combination of a bit of exercise, the beauty of the forest and flames, the interesting stories and of course some outdoor cuisine was very... More

Great experience - really enjoyed the trip and the walk through the bush. Shelley was a really good, informative guide. So interesting seeing the flames burning in the middle of the bush and hearing the unexpected history of oil drilling in the area. Five of the seven in the group lived in the Nelson/Tasman area so it is good to... More

Yes - it's fun to show people there is always something else to see or do locally. Let's hope the oil price doesn't go up too much too soon! Thanks for the review More

Wow! How do you describe such a unique experience. Treking through the woods to the flames and then suddenly coming upon them was so special. Shirley was authoritative about the plants and trees which we encountered en route and then set to and made scrumptious pancakes on the fire. The best we've ever tasted, especially with the beech tree dew... More

That's the amazing thing about these flames - suddenly coming across them in the middle of the forest. Glad you enjoyed the pancakes! Thanks for the review. More

I just thought I'd like to put the first review in Japanese here:)

Thanks so much Tomoko. It was great to have you on the trip, and lucky for us that you speak such good english. We do try to explain a few things in other languages with our very limited ability - but we are VERY limited! Glad you got back safely and hope to see you next time you are in... More

Totally unique is putting it mildly, for anyone who wants something different The Natural Flames experience is it. Our guide Merve was the perfect host, we had a 20 minute ride to the start of the walk, then 1 hour easy to moderate walk,, suitable for all ages through beautiful forest, where if lucky enough you see wild deer, Native... This is an extraordinary and weird natural phenomenon - and you have it to yourself. Bumping along tracks in the landrover reminded me of heading off on safari and the valley is beautiful and through private land so no one else is around (except deer and emu). The drive and walk to the flames are fab, and our guide Merv, was... Thanks Jerrysheff. It's always good to be able to recognise what we are walking through. Sharing our (limited) knowledge is one of the joys of doing this trip for us. We are continuously learning; when we get asked something we don't know we try to find out for next time. Glad you enjoyed the trip. More

Although Murchison is not exactly a tourist spot, it does have a thigh that is definitely worth seeing: the Natural Flames Experience! I nearly couldn't go because tour times had been shifted due to a bad weather forecast, but when it turned out that there would be enough people for a tour in the morning, Merve even phoned my accommodation... This trip is run by Merve , owner of The Murchison Lodge. Kali the dog comes along as well and could probably guide you to the flames as well. There is a drive from Murchison which goes through farmland and then there is the walk through native bush which is a lovely walk and Merve provides lots of useful information... More

Thanks David. Actually, Kali is the main guide - I just tag along as she hasn't quite got the hang of pancake making yet! (She tends to eat them, if she can get to them before the tame NZ robin - which has switched on to the fact that there is food to be had when we arrive!!) Every day... More

Wonderful experience to see flames burning in the middle of dense native bush. Excellent information from our well informed guide Merve. A pleasant walk in through beautiful beech forest. A truly worthwhile sight in friendly Murchison.

Glad you found the area friendly Karen - its a great little town. The flames are moving around a lot at the moment so are in a different position even from two weeks ago; they are even more spectacular as they are going up the bank!! Thanks for the review... More
