Owner description: “If you think of gardening as an art form, Ayrlies is the best expression of that art”. Ayrlies is one of the select few New Zealand Gardens of International Significance. Bev McConnell presents a garden that is nearing maturity and is recognised for both design and horticultural excellence. The millennium year spurred a new project creating a wetland in the surrounding 10 acres which is now home to many native and visiting wildlife.

We were so lucky to be the only four people in the garden apart from one gardener - the advantage of visiting outside the main holiday period, I suppose. The garden design is so impressive, especially when you see the before and after photos on display. We spent quite a while sitting watching the fish and various insects by the... More

My friend and I just meandered around and loved the garden and the ponds. Great arrangement of flowers, colours and trees. Always a great place to contemplate or meditate. Such a peaceful place.

We have visited major British gardens such as Hatfield House Chatsworth and Sissinghurst. Believe me when I tell you Ayrlies is right up there with them. You can't beat Arlyies on a summers day - and on one memorable day we were feasted with operatic highlights to go with the beauty of the gardens.

I went on an organized coach tour, so access was no problem, and found Ayrlies to be a beautiful spot. It is near Auckland. A transplanted Brazilian gardens there and gave us a full and informative tour.

You will definitely need a car to get to Ayrlies Garden as there is no public transport option. Indeed, the journey from the city takes you past some of the most unglamorous parts of Auckland, with “strip malls” of DIY sheds, supermarkets, large identikit housing estates, etc. But when you arrive at the Gardens, they are an absolute delight –... This is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever visited. It is amazing to see hiw much has been achieved in a relatively short space of time, in gardening terms that is. We saw this garden on the Monty Don BBC Around the World in 80 Gardens tv programme and as we were visiting NZ took the opportunity... More

I have beemn fortunate enough to have been to Ayrlies Garden and 3seperate occasions. The gardens and lakes are magical and the vista out over the wetlands to the ocean quite remarkable. Ayrlies is situated in a semi rural setting and hast vast acreage. It is a mature garden but is continually being worked on to improve the overall feel... More
