You can take an audio tour, but do not need to. The Trail from the viewing deck is an easy walk. Heading up from the Artist's Studio is a bit more strenuous, but not overly difficult--250 stairs to climb, but not all at once. It drops you off at a much less crowded viewing spot that is considerably closer.

The trail is not difficult and worth the short hike. Keep in mind that you will hike up about 200 steps on the trail so make sure that you have decent footwear. The view is much better of the monument from the trail and this was the best activity I've done in the area. Walk past all the overpriced shops... More

We'd been to Mt. Rushmore about 20 years ago and this trail didn't exist. It is a very nice addition and gives you even more opportunities for unique pictures. A less than strenuous walk but a number of steps, both up and down, even though it is only a mile long.

Get the audio tour! Family of 4 for $20, recommend. My husband and I enjoyed it but so did my son (9)

The trail allows you to get up close to the monument - I was surprised by how close we really were. There are lots of steps, so it's not for the faint of heart!

If you go to Mt. Rushmore, take this trail. It gives different views and perspectives of the monument. Very nice!

This trail gets you the closest to the presidents. It's a relatively easy paved trail with some stairs and a bit of a climb up and down. Stop by the Sculptor's Studio for a ranger talk and see some of the tools and casts used by the workers. Amazing. If you have a National Park Passport, there's a stamp here... More

We must have taken 50 pictures of the Mount: from the interstate, from the observation deck, and at every twist and turn of the beautiful Presidential Trail! The trail is well maintained, has signs with information on all of the Mount Rushmore Presidents, and benches/resting area along the way. Please note there are loads of stairs...even with the resting areas,... More

I am surprised at how many people think there are a lot of stairs at this attraction. Either most people are older, or handicapped (and I can understand them having an issue with the stairs), but for the rest of you, you need to get out more often and exercise if this was too many stairs! I personally wish we... More

This trail is a must-do while visiting Mount Rushmore. Don't let the steps deter you, because no-where else will you get views like you will on this trail. Be sure to take every side trail because you will be surprised and amazed by what you see. At the "bottom" of the trail you will get to visit Gutzon Borglum's studio... More
