Plan on spending a couple of hours here. The museum is very good and one of the best I have seen in a medium sized city.

vmfa is a great place to visit, one of the largest art museums in the country but not very well-known. their art nouveau / art deco gallery is one of the best/largest collections of its kind in the world and is a must-see. the only disappointment is the 21st century collection, apparently curator john ravenal has never heard of digital... This is an exceptional art museum. I think can only repeat the raves you read in the other reviews. So many great works to see and experience. It is just as beautiful inside as outside. It is three floor of art work, two restaurant each with great views of outside sculpture garden or water fountains. Since we were there as... More

The building itself is modern, open and airy, the staff very friendly...the manner in which they combine sculpture and paintings and the overall layout is truly outstanding,. The Julian Schnabel painting really was an eye opener for me since he is the director of the movie "the diving bell and the butterfly" which I had seen just the week before... More

Lots of diversity. Beautiful building. Free! Some exhibits closed for renovation. But we couldn't see everything in just this one visit. One complaint: the museum gift shop had too many high ticket items that were way too expensive. Not enough postcards, posters, and tshirts.

Wonderful experience. The building and grounds are stunning. The art is compelling. They have lots of art by artists that one is not familiar with. That is good. It is an experience that will help one grow. Faberge exhibit was on tour - disappointed. But, it will be back. The Art Deco and Impressionism was gone because the roof was... More

Accessible and interesting examples of wide range of art. Not there now but one of the larger Faberge exhibits available.

Well worth a visit, and when the restoration is completed their Faberge collection will make this an exceptional museum. The cafe is also nice with outside decking area to relax in

This museum, which is free, is an amazing effort to take the visitor from the beginnings of civilization to 20th century painters. There's sampling of works from all over the world for this expanse of time. Unless you live in a large city with quality museums, this is a must for all visitors to Richmond.

I was pleasantly surprised with the exhibits and the amount of artwork this museum carries. Our visit was soley to see one exhibit and unfortunatley I didn't get a chance to view more but I will definitely try to visit again next time I'm in Virginia.
