Love this museum, and visit often when I'm in town. Beware of the special exhibits, though - even with timed tickets, the crowding makes it very hard to see anything.

I have visited museums around the world, but few can even come close to the beauty and the expansive collections at the VMFA. From Faberge eggs to contemporary art and sculpture, this is a place you don't want to miss if you visit Richmond. The Forbidden City exhibit was breathtaking. Last year, VMFA was host to a Hollywood costume exhibit... More

The VMFA has wonderful special exhibits, but even without those there are layers of art work, eras, and cultures to discover in the museum. It seems far larger inside than what one sees on the outside. Take one of their highlights tours and you will see why this museum has so many layers. It will also help you to plan... More

Greta temporary exhibit, however, there should be a systematic method to control the flow of visitors. Crowded does not have to be chaotic.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a gem! We visited there to see a special Exhibit - The Forbidden City - and ended up staying 3 hours to see much of the Permanent Collection as well. Don't miss it.

There were many artifacts from the Forbidden City museum in Beijing from the 18th century. I was surprised at how many European artists (who traveled there as missionaries) produced exquisite paintings on silk in the Chinese style.

Museum has excellent temp exhibits and the Chinese exhibit is great. Have been to China twice and the period of this exhibit--1700s--is the best period for art, and I saw things here that I did not see in China. There is a small cafe for a quick snack. The upper dining area requires a reservation and a fat wallet--have not... More
