You can walk from Boston to the country along the Charles River. There is a great place with a park for children about six miles from Boston along the river. It is a great place to picnic. There are places to buy food not too far away.

Boston's Charles River is as active a "playground" as the streets & historical sites. Check out the local Kayak & Paddleboard vendors; take a cruise along the Charles; watch the sailboats from the community sailing centers & colleges; or head toward Long Wharf to any one of several great harbor cruise options!

There are paths along the river which make for pleasant walking, jogging or bike riding. There were sculls/shells out when I was there and that made for great watching. Shared space with some ducks and geese. It's a great river : > )

I've been visiting Cambridge and the Charles River since the late 1960s when my brother was at MIT. The Charles is such a wonderful asset to Boston and Cambridge. A stroll along the river, with all the students from Harvard, MIT, BU and other colleges in the area taking in the sun or having a picnic or jogging makes you... More

I probably run on the paths along the Charles River at least three or four times a week. The Esplanade is beautiful. A run along the river on late summer afternoons guarantees a beautiful sunset. It's a great place to run, people watch, and picnic. The docks make an especially ideal place to enjoy a packed dinner with a bottle... More

As we wandered around the Boston Area we kept crossing or following the Charles River. We saw many people near it and around it, and even on it in boats. We went on it in one of the Duck Tours and went by a place where you could access it to swim in it. Next time if it is warmer... More

It's best to come down to it from the MIT T-stop, and just walk around it for a little bit. You can take cool pictures of the skyline and just enjoy the scenery.
