This has to be one of the best free places to visit in all of the Boston area. Unfortunately, it's only open in the summer. The garden is gorgeous! The house is amazing, much of it restored to look as it did when Longfellow was alive. The guides are patient, well-informed and enjoy answering questions!

For almost half a century (1837 - 1882) this was the home of one of the world's foremost poets, scholars and educators, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It was also a favorite gathering place for historical figures such as George Wsahington, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is open for public touring Wednesday through Sunday.

This house tour is wonderful. Although it emphasized Longfellow's time there, the house was originally owned by a Tory, taken over by the Continental Army and housed George Washington during his stay in Cambridge. Couldn't ask for much more history than that. The National Parks Service operates this and does a great job with the tour. Don't miss it!

The tours are definitely worthwhile. Our guide read us relevant passages from Longfellow poems and taught us about the history of the house's many occupants. The garden is nice, too.

So glad I found out about The Longfellow House on Tripadvisor. I had visited Boston many times and never knew it existed. It didn't take long to walk to it from Harvard Square and I am so glad I went.

Longfellow was a cultural Titan of the 19th century, the only American poet honored in Westminster Abbey and a creator of iconic images in verse. This was my second trip to the Longfellow house just a few blocks from Harvard Square. This is a great tour and a home brimming with history (it was George Washington's headquarters during a portion of the Revolutionary War and in the Longfellow family for many, many years). Visited the historical site last weekend...the guide that took us on the tour was fantastic. Her knowledge and enthusiasm was infectious.
There were numerous children on the tour and all of them were fascinated!!! A real surprise and definitely attributed to the guide's engaging presentation abilities.
