Absolutely gorgeous and intricate, inside and out. I've now photographed 49 state capitals (haven't been to Hawaii) and I believe this is the most beautiful. Don't just see the outside, be certain to go inside and see every room they'll let you in.

The Illinois State Capitol is a must-see. It is extremely ornate with magnificent inlaid marble, incredible ironwork and stunning paneling. Built in 1877, this beautiful building is filled with intricate craftsmanship.

While not a historic building - all the Lincoln history took place in the old State Capitol, and President Obama seemed to vote "present" here and nothing else - this is one impressive State Capitol. The building was built at the height of the Victorian age and the state of Illinois is doing a fantastic job to restore it. You... More

went here to be in the room that Lincoln was layed in state in, and found out that the building had been taken down, and completely redone. The only truly original pieces were the shell of the building. Interior looks similar to back then with the same arrangement, but the carpets are poor quality repro's, and rooms are simply not... Take a minute to step inside the Illinois State Capitol building. There are guided tours available, or just wander around looking at the beautiful staircases, murals, and lovely architecture. Look up at the amazing rotunda and marvel at its variety of colors and shapes. Some of the rooms, such as the Old Supreme Court, are open to the public. Stay... More

What a beautiful building with such grandeur. We went in by chance, but this has got to be a must see for visitors. The tours of the building go regularly and the guides are a font of information. You can park free outside on the driveway on non sitting days. The paintings, glass work and guilded decorations are superb. This... More

Went on a Sunday morning, not busy at all, Mrs & I were the only folks during our tour time. Tours last about 25 mins. Worthwhile to go on a tour as you have access to many more areas than if just self guided.

Most go in 8th grade. I never did and am glad I waited. It's a beautiful place. The tour guide was excellent. Even security was friendly. The best part was how close it was to our hotel and other attractions. We walked to everything we wanted to see after starting here at 9 am. I suggest getting here early if... More
