The outside of the building is beautiful!! But don't miss the inside. This is a spectacular state capitol. Recently renovated and architecturally amazing! They gave us a free tour too. We saw both houses ()President Obama's senate seat) and the old supreme court room.

The state's capitol is open from 9 - 5 with free tours on the hour and half hour. The docent was knowledgeable and patient with questions. We the people have open access to the Senate and House of Representatives. The statues and artwork were worth the visit alone.

I learned how to speak with a state representative when the General Assembly is in session. You write your representative's name on the back of your business card and give it to the Sargeant at Arms - then wait about twenty minutes and he/she will come out and call out your name - it worked! I was doubtful of this... More

This is the 5th state capital that I've had the opportunity to view and I have to say it might be the best so far. Incredible inside and out. You might have to see this one to appreciate it yourself. Lots to do in the land of Lincoln, so spend a day or 2, you'll be glad you did.

When we travel we have made it a point to try to get to each of the state capitols. We do not usually take the tours of the inside but instead merely walk the grounds and learn about the history, etc. from the monuments on site, while enjoying the architecture of the various domes. The Illinois capitol is another in... More

We only walked the outside area of the Capitol. The statues on the grounds are beautiful and include a huge Abe Lincoln where the lighting gives his head 2 shadows, one looks like a cop and the other a soldier. Interesting dynamic. The capitol dome lights up at night and adds to the picture especially with old glory flying above.

Illinois statehouse, very ornate many old pieces of artwork to observe. Enjoyed the building but the State worker providing the tour was a classic example of cronyism, after 14 years of providing Capital tours you would expect her to know the Motto of the State (Land of Lincoln), when asked about who the statues were she know the canned spill... A must-see while in Springfield - this is a grand example of neoclassical state capitol building, complete with statuary and interesting murals. Plan to take the tour.

Since we were in the area, we decided to take the capitol tour. Interesting artwork and statues throughout. Be sure to walk to the various statues/memorials outside the capitol.
