I pulled up on a Tuesday evening in August to capture this beautiful structure at sunset. The way the sun reflects off the dome is beautiful. Add the lightening and this is an incredible view! While setting up my tripod I surprised to encounter a squad car that quickly pulled up and passed me parking near my car. After shooting... More

I'm on a mission to see all 50 state capitols, and Illinois made # 21 for me. It's situated beautifully within springfield, just a few blocks away from the old state capitol, also worth a look. The tour was a bit rushed, but the architectural detail was fantastic. Take some time to look around after the tour is over.

We have had the opportunity to visit the capital buildings in a lot of states. This is one ranks right up there at the top. It is awesome! Our tour guide, Dorothy, was knowledgeable and friendly. The tour is free and this building is a must see. President Lincoln's body was brought here for people to pay their respects prior... More

We visited the capital in May. We did not make reservations for tour, but was given brief tour. The guide was hard to hear/understand. The students were all high school. The building is pretty and the history is interesting.

so beautiful all year round - built with unabashed grandeur to appreciate and examine. Great for a short visit.

Fortunately for us, we arrived right when the tour was kicking off, else we would have had to wait two hours and been sorely disappointed. Given that the tour itself only lasts about 25 minutes and they are only every two hours (at least on the day I was on), the guide could have taken a little more time to... More

Having visited a number of state capitols, I'm becoming a bit of a connoisseur. I would rank this one as a second-tier visit. The tour was educational at a basic level, and the tour guide was extremely friendly and happy to answer questions. No reason to visit the Visitor's Center across the street, though -- they seem to exist primarily... More

Attended right when they opened and it was clean, cool and the guards were friendly (except the crabby one.) Bathrooms clean and the monuments/statues inside very interesting. Waiting for Blago and Quinn's portraits to be hung.

We enjoyed the tour. Very informative. It was very nice to get to see where all of our state's decisions are made. The architecture is very impressive. My children and I enjoyed this very much. Definitely a revisit.

There's plenty of history and beauty in the Illinois State Capitol, but it seems that tourist are an afterthought to the workings of state government. The Capitol Police handling security were amazingly friendly and helpful, but otherwise the visitor is left pretty much to themselves to find their way around and interpret what they see. As a lawyer, this was... More
