In the snow, this is a tough hike. Be prepared for slow-going in the snow. View from the top ... incredible, and so, worth it!

It's a tough hike but it's totally worth the view! Did it last year! And I am planning on doing it again this year! Like I said the view is phenomenal

Let me preface by saying that Flattop is an enjoyable hike that gives even the inexperienced the chance to climb a real mountain. The view is phenomenal, and the trail is not ridiculously long. However, if you want to connect with nature, this is not the trail for you. Flattop is more of a pilgrimage than anything else. On a... More

Without realizing what in involves, I was considering it, but as soon as I found out, I quickly changed my mind. I am more the type of person who would go on a little hikes or just take the tramway and enjoy a view from the top. But if you are into hiking and takes all the safety precautions, this... More

If you live in Anchorage you know Flattop, if you are even a portion of an outdoors-person you have probably been to Flattop (at least part of it). It is probably the most popular hike around Anchorage and the only way it ever disappoints is by its popularity, but with so many people around if an accident were to happen... More

There is at least 20 minutes of hand over hand climbing to reach the peak. Make sure you have shoes with good soles and clothes you do not mind getting a little dirty (you might want to slide on your butt in a few places on the way down.) Wear at least one layer that you can take off and... More

What a treasure of a place this is! It's not so far from downtown Anchorage. Roughly 15-20 minutes away and before you know it, you are looking down at the City of Anchorage. This is probably the nearest place in Anchorage to get close to the Chugach mountains. When my husband and I were here in August, it was probably... More

The really nice thing about Flattop is it's versatility. You can stop by, get out for 5 minutes or 5 hours and have a good time. For those who do not want to hike, you can enjoy the city view from the parking lot. Or you can hike the lower loop in about an hour for an easy day and... More

The trailhead is about 25km from central Anchorage. We understand that there is a shuttle bus but we hired a car and drove to the car park. Take water, warm clothing and rainwear just in case. It's a steep walk that gets steeper and involves some walking on loose surfaces but dogs, kids and everyone seem to go up there!... More
