an important tip - make sure that the glacier boat is running - im Mid May 2012 it was completely frozen in. the center was also closed - due to open shortly. More

A good introduction to glacier info at the visitors center, as well as the area. Glacier can't really be seen from the park, must take the lake boat tour, fee charged, which wasn't operating yet, still ice on the lake and snowing in early May. Portage Glacier has receded so much over the years that simply going to Portage won't do. Wait until the summer months and take the short hike to Byron -- that will give you a much better feeling for glaciers! The 5-mile Glacier Highway is quite stunning on nice weather days... More

You really can not imagine what a Glacier is without taking a boat ride and seeing it up close. The wildlife you see is fantastic. More
