Conveniently located on the west end of the Whittier Tunnel – in terms of ‘bang for your buck’ and ‘time efficiency’ this is a winner. Compared to Columbia Glacier in Valdez and Ailik Glacier in Seward, the boat ride is short, the water was calm, and the glacier was lovely. And they had a 2-for-1 coupon in the TourSaver. more

May 3, 2004. We are a family of seven all disappointed in this glacier. Unless you are passing it on the way to Whittier, you're better off to head south to Exit Glacier. more

The Portage Glacier is slowly melting -- it has receeded a lot in the past years. Go see it while it's still there. In the Visitor Center you can also touch icebergs, chunks of which are "harvested" from the lake daily. See a picture of the glacier at http://www.slackerdom.com/alaska/anchorage/portageg_01.html. Portage Glacier is the most popular attraction in Alaska --... more
