As you roam the subterranean passages that once were the main roadways and first-floor storefronts of old downtown Seattle, our guides regale you with the stories our pioneers didn’t want you to hear. It’s history with a twist! The tour begins inside Doc Maynard’s Public House, a restored 1890s saloon. Following a short intro, we’ll walk through historic Pioneer Square to three different sections of Underground—about three blocks in all... « less

My friend recommended I do this tour as have visited Seattle a few times but never did this tour. It is a great insight into the history of Seattle. I found it fascinating it was Seattle was built on flats and that the level of the city had to be increased in height to prevent flooding. Our guide Mary was... More

I attended the "after hours" tour, which just means that certain less savory aspects of Seattle's history were spoken of in plain language and not just innuendo. I thoroughly enjoyed learning of Seattle's early history and seeing what remains of the early city. There's a lot of walking, including up and down stairs and over uneven flooring.

As a lifelong resident of Seattle I was completely unaware of our unusual history that involves tides, Mr. crapper, fires and deadly entrances to store fronts. The tours I have been on with out of town guests have all been with equally funny and interesting guides. If you haven't done it, do it! It's so Seattle.

I mean - the stories were a little interesting ... but it's kind of like wandering through a basement and sometimes you are in a place where it is too noisy or you are too far from the tour guide to hear what is happening. I prefer the ghost tour. Much more fun and they talk about the gruesome details... More

A hilarious, but accurate, history of the founding of Seattle. You can't make stuff like this up. Very entertaining.

When visiting a new place, I try to find something unique to the city to explore and also learn about the area. This tour certainly does that well. It's storytelling with props as you crawl through tight spaces and through dark passage ways and listen to the struggles and solutions of days gone by. Our tour guide was engaging and... More

Put your walking shoes on before you start. There are several (3+??) different tours and each one is different enough to enjoy all. So much history and wacky solutions that built Seattle. Very informational and highly recommended.

Seattle's history comes alive when you go underground. Learned many things about Seattle that we didn't even think we had an interest. Our guide "Elvis" was great. He told quite a few stories about how and what "went on" during Seattle's gold rush hey-days. Will do it again.

Bill Speidel (author of the book Sons of the Profit") has created a whimsical and very enlightening tour of Seattle underground (Spoiler Alert: the founding fathers built the city tow low above the tidal mudflats and the city had to be raised, literally by over on entire floor, thus leaving, due to lack of coordination between homeowners and the city...
