We had a jeep wrangler and you need it for you go several miles over rough terrain and yes there were some cars that do it but they are idiots as they are ruining their or car rentals vehicles. We seen one car being towed and I know that can't be cheap lol what an idiot!!!!!! Then after you park... More

at the end of the worst road I've ever driven on, and after a long sweaty hike is this little oasis. Great snorkeling, sunbathing, and swimming.

We take our 4WD truck down here for a very bumpy 25 minute ride. It's ONLY for experienced 4WD drivers who have big trucks and are not afraid to use them! White sand, no crowds, blue water. Heaven.

If you don't mind an easy walk in (about 20 minutes over a very well defined trail - but don't do it in your bare feet) then these couple of bays in Makalawena Bay are for you! Just follow the directions to Kekaha Kai State Park (turn off between mile markers 90 and 91 then drive down the 1 1/2... More

This was, by far, our favorite beach. It was a bit of a bear to get to - a semi annoying hike through a hot lava field - but boy, was it worth it. Pure bliss.

I had read about this beach and decided to make the trek, it is a little awkward to find, research the directions well. The road leading to the parking area is as bad as it gets, you must drive at a crawls pace in order to nor wreck our car.yaounthen park and walk 20 minutes, I wouldn't call this a... More

This is one of the best beaches EVER. And it's not just one beach; there are several sandy areas to choose from in the Makalawena area, and they're all good. At least two of them require a bit of a hike (one including about 20 minutes across a lava field), but it's TOTALLY worth it. In fact the effort you... More

Road is fine, don't worry about taking it in your rental car. Probably nice views but foggy when we went this route. Nevertheless, nice alternate return route after driving to Hilo through Waimea.

My wife, on the other hand, hated it. Well, not the beach itself but the truly horrid road to the parking lot and then the fairly long walk over a lava field trail pretty much did it for her. The beach itself is lovely in a Big Island sort of way. Not much shade but pretty empty and quite beautiful... More
