Got this deal through Wyndham's aloha discount card for $50 including some "rental clubs" for free. Course has very nice Bent grass greens (although slower than you think) and is very playable from white tees. the rental clubs they gave me were several years old and tended to fade without effort. but toe them in and they will work fine.... This is a great alternative to the more crowded resort courses (and it's cheaper, too). Located on the "upper road" at a higher elevation, it is often cooler, even misty at times. The course is hilly and great fun -- even for a duffer like me. Great scenery and some wildlife along the way add to the fun. Good "twilight"... More

My wife and I decided to give Makalei another try. We played there in 2008 and were not really impressed. But some friends played in 2011 and said it was quite nice .The tract has really gone downhill since 2008. The golf carts are in terrible condition, the first hole fairway had just been cut, and it was a clumpy,wet... More

Mountain course with beatiful scenery. Good price and well worth the drive up the mountain to play it. More

What a disappointment! We had fond memories of the Makalei course from when we used to live here and were eager to play it again. If not for the peacocks still wandering everywhere, I wouldn't have believed it to be the same place. Staff was decidedly unhelpful, carts ready to fall apart, fairways dried out and dead looking, yet greens... More

The elevation provides exceptional views on this fairly well maintained course. It's cool on warm days and the natural beauty is exceptional. More

I have played on many golf courses in the world including in Beirut, Lebanon where the bunkers were made from the former craters of bombs from their 20 year protracted civil war! But I had never played almost scratching the belly of cloud cover…so bear with my introductory description. Almost directly above the Kailua-Kona airport at an elevation of 2,800+... More

Love this place. Nice course, reasonable, great views, etc. Peacocks are all over as well as other birds. Apparently they make a laughing sound which is awesome after a crappy drive. If you don't mind birds laughing at your golf game, come to Makalei. Super good time and great location. More

While playing golf on Hawaii, I played at a lot more expensive courses than Makalei and I played at courses that were in better condition, but none offered the combination of golf for the money that Makalei did. First, the location is stunning. The course is on the hillside, halfway up Hualalei. The elevation changes are dramatic and cause you... More
