We were just in Kona, and wanted to play golf. The Kona Country Club was closed for repairs, and the highway north was undergoing construction, making the trip up to the Hapuna area a real nightmare. We found the Makalei course and played there. Very fun. You arrive in the parking lot, and you're near 2,000 feet elevation. To get... More

Rarely do you find a golf course so "away-from-it-all". While it is not the most manicured of courses it is totally enjoyable to play. Every hole offers something different with either a challenging dogleg or well protected green. Definitely worth a visit now with possible "future development" signs posted.

I have been meaning to check this golf course out for a long time and finally got the chance to play since I was staying at Keauhou in September, 2015 on vacation. It was the closest course, and I wanted to play 36 homes and started early. Well, I got tee time with Hawaii Tee Time, which was better price... More

The Makalei Golf Course has a lot of elevation changes and is said to be one of the toughest courses in the state. Believe it! If you don't hit your drives straight, bring extra balls! We found the course to be pleasantly cooler than the resorts courses closer to the ocean. (MGC is above 1500' and in a nice green... More

Wow...a gorgeous setting, long drives trough the rain forest from green to tee, and a very beautiful layout. There is some trouble to get into - but if you can keep it in the short grass this course can be had. The wildlife - especially the birds - Peacocks, pheasants, and lots of others...were the highlight.

This course is the 22nd toughest course in the world and it lives up to its reputation. You are virtually in a rain forest with dips and valleys and changes in elevation. Every hole is a challenge and you really feel the 18 holes when you finish. Carts only--thank goodness! Wild peacocks including the famous albino peacock are all over... More

Makalei is a terrific course in the hilly territory above Kona. Challenging play with the fun of seeing lots of local wildlife and beautiful flora. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Book on Internet for best rates. Do take water - there is none of the course. And extra balls as you may well lose a few,

Makalei Golf Club, up country from Kona, presents a challenging course. It has steep slopes and requires precise shots to keep out of the rough and trees. Bring lots of balls if you tend to hook or slice your shots. Plenty of peacocks and other birds gather throughout the course. Apparently, folks feed the fowl, not a smart move for... More

Challenging round of golf-lots of hills-a very playable course if you don't play aggressive-great scenery-peacocks all over. Great afternoon of golf-would definitely play again.

I loved it all. The staff (Ralph the Starter and Barb the Driving Range were helpful. The peacocks were all over the place. The course has a driving range and practice putting and chipping greens. My morning round cost $85, which I scored from the golf club's website. My wife rode along at the cost of another 21 minutes.
