Fun and challenging course

I found it a very pretty course, challenging too. I played by myself, rented clubs since I was traveling through. The woman on the phone told me to look for the coupon in the rental car coupon book and that gave me a discount worth $50 off green fees and rental clubs. I always travel with a golf glove and... I recently played my first round of golf in over 15 years. Makalei was the course that I played. The course is on ok shape. There were some holes where you could see where the wild pigs rooted around, and it seemed like everyone forgot how to repair ball marks. The challenge with this course is the hills. It helps... Recently returned to golf after 15 years..and a hip replacement. This course is challenging and so beautiful that my score became secondary to the enjoyment of being with the flora and fauna! Several times I thought I'd hit a good shot only to find I was mistaken...frustrating, but get over it.... Definitely bring a windbreaker for possible showers and breezes.... More

This course has the local vibe to it. Very laid back and fun to play. Although without the $80 coupon, green fees would've been way to high for the course condition. A cart is a must on this course which makes it even more fun. The first tee box is literally a five minute drive up the mountain and the... More

I would like to know who had the vision to make this stunning golf course in this demanding terrain? For a 20-handicapper like myself it is plenty challenging, and the scenery and wildlife can't be beat. Today we saw peacocks, ne ne, turkeys, wild boar and lots of colorful birds. Members and staff are very welcoming and accommodating to visitors... More

One of the first places I have played golf at, ant still one of my favourites! The courses are semi-challenging and is great for any beginner looking to start the game. I have played a fair amount at this golf course and like I said before, still great! My sisters favourite part is the peacocks, they sell seed for them... More

This is sort of you get what you pay for. My wife and I played 4 courses on our vacation and this was the worst but also the cheapest. The layout has a lot of blind shots as well as some holes that have enough slope in the fairways that you can hit what you think is a quality shot... More

Loved this course. The staff are very friendly and helpful. When we were hitting off the range their PGA coach came up and gave us some free advice that totally made my wife and I day better. The course is spread out and you never feel like you are on top of other people. It is beautiful with several peacocks... More

We were just in Kona, and wanted to play golf. The Kona Country Club was closed for repairs, and the highway north was undergoing construction, making the trip up to the Hapuna area a real nightmare. We found the Makalei course and played there. Very fun. You arrive in the parking lot, and you're near 2,000 feet elevation. To get... More

Rarely do you find a golf course so "away-from-it-all". While it is not the most manicured of courses it is totally enjoyable to play. Every hole offers something different with either a challenging dogleg or well protected green. Definitely worth a visit now with possible "future development" signs posted.
