After checking-in the drive up the driving range is all uphill. The course claims an elevation range from 1,800 to 2,850 feet which creates both spectacular views of the ocean over the trees but also challenging holes where "up and down" has a whole new meaning. The four tee boxes have length/slope of 7091/144, 6698/140, 6161/134, and 5242/118. While there... More

I have played many courses around the country. This has to be one of the hardest. It isn't the longest out there, but it is tough. No level lies anywhere accept the tees. You are either firing up to a green or down to a green. The greens are relatively small but roll true and hold shots into them. The... More

The course needs some maintenance. Most of the tee boxes had not been repaired in some time. It didn't affect play, only the aesthetics. If you are expecting great views, this is not the place to go. You occasionally catch a glimpse of the coast. The uphill holes are as tough as the downhill holes are easy. The greens and... More

The lake Par 3 is fun but if you miss you messed. Peacocks run, birds chirp, balls go bye bye. Greens are slow and the rocks are hard. for a straight shooter it can be fun but this is no light-weight course. I'd play it just to say I did and it is never hot up there so for a... More

I went to this course solo and played and early morning round. There was one foursome ahead of me and the let me through. The course was full of peacocks and other beautiful birds. Now the course was very challenging and hilly. It was in great shape and the weather was perfect. The staff took great care of me and... More

This is one of the most beautiful courses I've ever seen that doesn't empty your wallet to golf on and the amazing exotic birds all over are so fun to see. We've gotten some pictures even placed in the local newspaper. My husband golfs at Makalei 2-3 times a week!

This golf course is deceiving. The first thing that is deceiving is that it appears very unfriendly. We tried to play this course earlier in the week and were rained out. They advised us that we could have a rain check to use later in the week. However, when we arrived today to use the rain check, confusion seemed to... More

If you enjoy challenging golf in a spectacular setting with unbelievable views and peacocks, this course is worth the drive. It is probably the best golf value on the Big Island, as well. Lots of tee times available and the very reasonable green fees include cart (a must have).

We enjoyed a round of golf at Makalei during a stay on the Big Island. It is up the "mountain" from Kona airport. Scenic area populated with numerous flocks of pheasants, yellow canaries, and others I could not identify. Great views from some tees, though most holes take you away from the ocean side and into the forests. Greens fees... More

The staff were very unaccommodating ( do it yourself ) bordering on rude and leave a bad taste to start . The clubhouse facilities are at best poor (very small very outdated no service ) Old style noisy golf carts that can be exciting or even dangerous on this very hilly course . The course is in poor condition and... More
