Owner description: Since the day the Big Island Country Club opened to rave reviews in 1997, it has been on the "must play" list of the golfing visitor to Hawaii's Big Island. That's not only because of its spectacular location and scenic beauty, but equally because of its well-deserved reputation as a course that welcomes both the novice player as well as the low-handicap expert. The course is simultaneously enjoyable yet challenging, and is designed for every level of playing ability. Designed by famed golf course architect Perry Dye, son of Pete Dye, the par 72 course has all the popular attributes and interesting features that make his layouts so popular to golfers of varying skills: wide, gently rolling bermuda grass fairways, medium-size undulating Bent grass greens, and an abundance of water.

A slight drive for a great course, but non-locals get to see the upper road for wonderful scenic views and hopefully a goat spotting!! Affordable by Big Island standards.

I've read some negative reviews on this course, but I really don't know where they're coming from. It's not a five-star resort, and the rates reflect that. To me, it's a bargain. Many beautiful views, and it's maintained pretty well, particularly the greens. You're golfing in the middle of a working sheep ranch, and they're lounging in the rough everywhere.... More

Perry Dye design. Greens could use work - just punching them and not cleaning out weeds and never rolling them isn't okay. The boxes need work too. But for the price, it is hard to beat, especially for, visitors to,our island.

The Big Island Country Club is a spiritual experience. The setting offers a variety of indigenous birds and vegetation in a lush up-country setting. Each hole is unique and the views of Hualalai and the Kohala Coast are spectacular. Playing this course is like spending time in a nature reserve. This is not a resort experience. No luxury condos line... More

This is a nice, somewhat forgiving course (on most but not all holes) to play for the average golfer. Some good water challenges and plenty of sand traps. We found the greens and fairways to be in good condition. Plenty of game birds (turkeys) and goats roaming around which was fun. No spectacular views but nice changes in elevation and... More

Booked through tee times.com and no mention of punched greens. I would save your money until the greens are in better condition. Very nice views and layout if greens were in good condition I would rate it a 4 but found no value in paying $70.00 to putt on a beach.

This is a reasonably priced track, with some great views, periodic rain showers, and lots of birds (not birdie, BIG BIRDS!)

Have stayed and played at Hapuna many times and this time did still not disappoint. The course is a little difficult the first few holes and then you settle in and enjoy.the fairways and greens are in good shape. Take a few extra balls though.

We have played here many times over the past 10 years and have always been impressed with the cooler climate, course design and the wonderful wildlife. Degrading conditions reversed a few years ago under new ownership; however, the place has gone downhill since our last visit. The general conditions mirror an under maintained muni with ragged tee boxes, weedy fairways... More

I played the Big Island Country Club on August 15, 2014 and had a great experience. My wife did not play but accompanied me through the round. We appreciated the courteous staff and were very impressed with their friendly manner. The course was in very nice condition and was a fun course to play. I loved it!
