Never, ever saw the Milky Way as clear and distinct as that night. Truly breathtaking. Please take the time to treat yourself to the opportunity to visit this attraction and see all of the observatories that are there and view the constellations from a new perspective.

Above the clouds. What else is there to say...its awesome in every sense of the word. I Liked the awesome view and the observatories that are up there. The Visitors center is sweet...you can see parts of the Milky Way Galaxy from here...very cool...very cool indeed.

The First Saturday of each month is a celebration at the visitors center. We hiked the summit at the visitors station to take part in the most amazing sunset-At dark the Summit's Astronomers pulled out 10 major telescopes-they shared freely information about the nights sky-we had a clear viewing of Mars and a Twin Star- Bring warm clothes , good... Chris did a wonderful job of getting us to and from Mauna Kea. His knowledge of the area was much appreciated as we had many questions about the geology and the observatories. He and Greg did a great job of showing us the night sky. Well worth the money.

If you can get up here, do. Sunset is breathtaking. We were too late to visit any of the observatories but we did see the telescopes rotating. Whether you're into astronomy or not, you'll love this place.

Once in a life experience to watch the volcano, lava lounge, lava tube... We stay in Kona and it takes fairly long time to drive, so we take a day trip from Hawaii Forest & Trail and we were so happy we made a great decision. Strongly recommend!

Mauna Kea visitor centre is 9000+ feet up. You can really feel the thin air and lack of oxygen. Move more slowly than normal. When we left Kona, it was 87 F. At the visitor centre, it was 61 F, so take a jacket and long pants. We went during the afternoon to see through the solar telescope they had... More

Oh this was just brilliant. We went with Hawaii Forest and Trail and from the moment we met our guide John Pippin at their office I knew this was going to be great. The whole journey was great with John firstly getting to know all 16 passengers by name, background etc. We had lots of laughs and he was so... More

We did the guided tour up the mountain (AWD or 4WD only!) which started with a 50 minute video in the visitors center. I highly recommend packing a lunch and using the picnic tables outside. The extra time while you're eating will help you get acclimated to the pressure change. After the video (about the creation of the observatories and... More

A trip to the summit, watch the sun set and star gazing. It was quite an experience climbing to nearly 14,000 feet where the air is thin, your head feels light and your legs heavy. We missed the sun set because of fog, but once we came down to 9,000 feet the star gazing was good. Can't blame the tour... More
