On a recent day trip to the big island of Hawaii, my wife and I decided to summit mauna kea to see the observatories. It takes two hours from the kona airport even though it doesn't look on a map like it would. All it takes is one slow person in front of you and youre at a thirty mph... More

Super!!! An Experience NOT TO BE MISSED!!!! Long Drive (Ride Really), but an Incredibly Good Guide, with a PASSION for Hawaii's History, Geology, Botany, Climate and One Incredible Astronomer!!!! Best Description of the Constellations, the Naming, the Mythology behind the names and Understanding of the Constellations and their significance that I have heard!!! And, a reasonably good meal (on the... More

Its great being able to take your boogie board up the mountain and use it as a sled, then in the same afternoon, finish your day off at Magic Sands Beach thawing out. Be prepared for the high altidude, small children tend to get cranky/fussy within 30-60 minutes and its time to head down. I personally believe the wait at... More

Don't be put off by any scary stories about Saddle Road. Compared to some Australian roads it's a freeway! We drove up to the visitors centre and watched a dvd. About a half hr before sunset the fog lifted and we walked to a viewing area about 10 mins away to watch the sunset. Quiet and beautiful and the clouds... More

If you're old enough to recognize the title of this review, you'll probably think the Carpenters were referring to being on the summit of Mauna Kea. It is just surreal being on Mauna Kea and literally driving through the clouds to get there is enough to make you as giddy as a school girl with a crush on <gasp> Justin... More

If you are pretty confident in your vehicle and your driving skills, go for it!! It's worth it, and the organized tours are pretty pricey. There was no snow or ice when we went, which may have made a big difference... We took a few hikes on the way up- very slow going due to the altitude! Go for sunset,... More

At over 13,000 feet, this is the closest place to call god in Hawaii. The sunset views are orgasmic (unfortunately, not the naughty variety), the drive is simple (even when you violate rental car contract drive to the top), and the visitor center at 9,000 feet is world class. Just remember, watch out for the invisible cows. I almost nailed... More

Okay, the site was pretty cool. There was no name "Mauna Kea" around the info center to identify in photos though. Most rentals are not geared to go up or down this grade. Amazing views nite and day!
