We were able to see a gorgeous sunset from the very top of Mauna Kea. We rented a Jeep and we were very happy that we did. The rental car companies are not kidding when they tell you not to take a car up there. There was a person that tried to take a car to the top and because... More

We made it to the visitor's center, not all the way to summit. Visitor's center not really worth the visit. Scenic view nice, but information provided was minimal.

A great experience but take it easy because of altitude sickness. guides knew their geology along with astronomy so we got a history of volcanoes and lava flows for first of trip. then a history of telescopes on summit as we watched the sunset above the clouds. then spend evening getting a short astronomy lesson as you get to look... We had a rental car that was not 4WD so we decided to try to hike instead. We hiked up for about 5.5 hours but then realized we really had not made all the progress we had hoped in that time, and were not close enough to the summit, so we turned around. Regardless it was a great experience and... More

The Mauna Kea Summit is breathtakingly beautiful! It's astounding that you can be on a warm beach in the morning and in 20 degree weather in the afternoon, on the same island. We rented a pick-up truck with 4 wheel drive and drove up to the Ranger Station. You should call first and ask to reserve a spot on their... More

Going up to14,000 ft above sea level is no easy task. The road from the visitor center is mostly dirt/gravel, and a harrowing, narrow cliffside track that is barely wide enough for two vehicles. 4x4 is a must and even then, it's best to go with someone who knows the road. It twists and turns, and if you aren't careful,... More

We take this trip every time we are in the Big Island. It is truly amazing that in about 2 hours you can drive through a number of climatic zones from sea level to about 9500 ft to the visitor centre. Then, after taking about an hour to acclimatize to the altitude, drive up to 14 000 ft. The drive... More

We went up to Mauna Kea summit for the sunset and stargazing with our Jeep. There are tours you can book but if you got a 4x4 vehicle, go on your own and make it in your pace and be able to stay as long as you like. I'd highly recommend spending the recommended 45min at the Ranger station to... More

We only made it up to the visitor center, but next time will make it all the way up. Did not have off road 4-wheel drive.
