This was truly great - used Mauna Kea summit adventures and they are the best. Guides are knowledges and personable and efficient.

The sunset and the whole experience up there was awesome. Took a tour bus from Kailua-Kona. Was glad we left the driving to someone else. The tour included a star show (from about 9000ft where one can stand to be outside longer) with an excellent host.

Take a Jacket! We arrived about 10 minutes after sunset but it was still beautiful. Snow on the ground in May! The road is Not for those who are faint hearted. 4 wheel drive is a wonderful thing here. Cars will make it but a 6 cylinder would be best if there are several people because of the steep grade.... travel path is well played out for when you are walking but it's an incredible view and everyone should see it at least once in their lifetime!

First time to Mauna Kea and went with the family using Mauna Kea Adventures. Very informative guide/driver. Stopped along the way for pics and anything else you needed. The views were awesome. Definatly wear jeans or warm pants and bring along a hoodie or sweatshirt. They do provide a warm parka coat with gloves and you will need them too.... More

Nothing prepares you for this amazing view. We went for sunset and I literally felt like I was close to heaven, above the clouds, watching one of the top ten most beautiful scenes in my life. A very spiritual place. Well worth renting a 4Wheel Drive to do it.

Bring plenty of layers, stay for the sunset, and walk slow - the elevation will sneak up on you. The telescopes are definitely worth a look.

Journey from the peaceful ocean shores to the top of the biggest mountain (if you add what is underwater) in the world. From waves to snow - it's an adventure
