Stunning sunset and beautiful night with uncountable starsssss!!!! It is very cold at the hill, like 12-13 degree only. It is worthwhile to visit and you will have no regret at all.

We signed up for a tour to the Mauna Kea Summit since we didn't have a 4WD. However, I would say, the roads upto Visitor Center (10000ft above sea level) was super easy. I do easily get car sickness and I was concerned that I might puke on my way to the summit which is like 14000 feet above sea... More

Over the Thanksgiving holiday I wanted to take my teenage son to the Mauna Kea Summit. By the time I called to sign up for a guided tour, they were all full on the days I could go. I was not deterred though. I have friends in Hawaii and they told me as long as I had a 4-wheel drive... More

The visit was excellent. View is fantastic. It is cold and take your own food and drink. Not impressed with volunteer astronomer

Mauna Kea Summit does a great job of transporting, feeding, and clothing (for warmth) Big Island visitors for a visit to the observatories atop Mauna Kea to watch the sun set below the clouds, then back down the mountain a bit to set up for star gazing, Expensive, but worth it at least once in your life!

Take the time to make this trip to the top of Mauna Kea. The views are beautiful. We were lucky that the weather while chilly (40 degrees) was sunny above the clouds. Definitely stop at the Visitors Center (at 9,200 ft.) to acclimate to the thin air. Most of the road is paved near the top. As long as you... More

The view is amazing! Make sure to stop at the visitors center! Just a word of advice...don't drive to the top unless you have great breaks and 4 wheel drive.

We loved watching the sunset from up here. They tell you not to take your rental car up. Be careful and you'll be fine. It was very cold - colder than we thought it would be so be prepared. The drive down was in the dark and fog. That was a little scarey!

I recommend spending time at the visitor center before heading to the top, and drink plenty of water! The landscape is interesting and well worth the 4-wheel drive to the top.
