This is a nice drive, though the scenery is not nearly as stunning as that on Needles Highway. The reason to drive this road is to experience the "pigtail" bridges. These bridges are engineering wonders, as they curve and change elevation. They were created to conquer the unique terrain in this area & are as pleasing to the eye as... More

Definately enjoyable. We took a lot of pictures and saw a lot of beautiful vistas. We stopped a lot as there seemed to be more lookout points with parking on this road than there was on the needles highway. It's definately nicer outside the park. The tunnels (3, 2, 1) are larger than they are on the needles highway and... More

I would highly recommend driving this road from Rt 36 toward Keystone and Mt Rushmore which allows you to see Mt Rushmore "framed" by several of the narrow tunnels you drive through along the route. The tunnels, "pigtail" bridges and views are all very impressive, as is the engineering that was involved to build this road. The road is in... More

17 of us road motorcycles through Iron Mountain Road and Needles Hwy. What amazing sites along the ride. The pigtail bridges and switchbacks are amazing. The road is in great condition and the views are unbelievable.

Amazing feat of engineering. Pavement is in good shape. Traffic is a bit slow, but that is the point. Pay attention as you enter the tunnels, as they are one way, and they frame Mt. Rushmore. Allow yourself plenty of time for this short stretch of road, you will want it. I wouldn't recommend for the novice rider.

Loved this road for the views from the tunnels to Mount Rushmore and the pigtail bridges (those bridges are so beautiful). Worth the trip up towards Mount Rushmore. Saw a bison by the road as well.

This road is beautiful. Many rock formations and several tunnels that as you enter or exit you will see Mt Rushmore in the distant. Makes for an excellent photo opportunity for you and the family!

If you have time for only one drive in the Custer State Park area, take this one. If you can take only two, drive both Iron Mountain and Pinnacles. The road was engineered to be scenic. The tunnel positions were fixed first because they all frame Mt Rushmore. (Two frame it traveling northbound, the other frames it southbound). Then the... More

Got to know this road when we were in the area. You can see the presidents through a tunnel at least twice on the road. Some are really good positions. The road is in good condition although one lanes during passing tunnels.
