Beautiful drive through the woods with a lot of features like tunnels and bridges. For a totally different look than the Needle's Highway this is a must do drive. The twists and turns provide a different view with every turn creating plenty of great photo spots of the hills and the presidents on the mountain.

The road is very scenic as well. The tunnels are literally carved out of very solid rock. With the right angle of approach you can get some real spectacular views of Mt Rushmore. The pigtail bridges are interesting as well.

This road leads from Mt. Rushmore to Custer State park. It also goes through part of Black hills National Forest. At one point we come up to a van stopped in the road at a point where there is no shoulder or anyway to get around them. We beep at them and the woman in the passenger seat starts waving... More

This drive was the perfect combination of scenery and stops for rock climbing. I was nursing a sore hip, so my husband and son took off and did a bunch of rock climbing without me. They took some awesome pictures. The best stop was the last tunnel, which affords a wonderfully framed view of Mount Rushmore. There are a ton... More

This is a terrific scenic drive of an ever turning road, winding its way through the mountains taking in bridges and tunnels and hairpin bends. There are three tunnels to drive through, carved from granite, each perfectly frame the Presidential faces of Mount Rushmore in the distance. Also on route are three pigtail bridges built in the 1930's which have... More

After reading other reviews, I was concerned that I might get car-sick if the road was too windy. This was not the case. The road has many switch-backs, pigtails, and curves. Cool looking bridges and tunnels. You can't race through this area. It is an engineering feat that they were able to make this road! The disappointment was not being... More

We took the Iron Mountain scenic drive in early October. The leaves were turning and it was really spectacular. Highlights were the view of Mt Rushmore through a couple of the tunnels and the wooden pigtail bridges. Definitely worth the time if in the area.

Great views of the surrounding countryside. It was fun going through tunnels. Watch for some really cute chipmunks.

Don't miss it! We thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Travel up it rather than down to really get best of it. About 4 tunnels to travel through, magic views everywhere
