We enjoyed this drive better than Needles Hwy. Amazing views of Mt. Rushmore when you go thru each tunnel. Just do it, you won't regret it.

We rode this on our motorcycle, the most amazing sites. Have your camera ready, as you enter the stone tunnel, Mt., Rushmore is perfectly framed!!! Just perfect!!! The Pigtail bridge is so much fun!!! You cannot miss this, if you are in the area, visit!!!

This is a beautiful drive that you must take if visiting Mt. Rushmore. The little glimpses you get of Mt. Rushmore as you travel this road are fantastic. The pigtail bridges are a wonderful sight as well as the tunnels and the split roadways. They definately make you think of camping. Beauty at it's best!!

We went a little out of our way to drive this road, based on the recommendation of a ranger at Mt Rushmore and I'm glad we did. If you want to see Mt Rushmore without having to actually stop and pay at the monument, you get some great views and photo ops from this road. But besides Mt Rushmore, there... More

This scenic highway runs from Mount Rushmore to Custer State Park. It includes three tunnels purposely engineered in the 1930s to "frame" Mount Rushmore as people drive from the state park to Borglum's gem. The governor at the time of construction, Peter Norbeck, is quoted as saying visitors should drive this highway at a very slow speed or "to do... More

This road is a must we actually drove it multiple times because of the beautiful scenery. There are tunnels that frame Mt Rushmore and pigtail bridges and very sharp curves. Not recommended towing anything. There are plenty of spots to pull over and take pictures and we even found a few to let the kids hike and climb on the... More

This road is a must. Incredible views of Black Hills Forest & Mount Rushmore. Cool pigtail bridges & single lane bridges that frame out Mt. Rushmore.

We took the Iron Mountain Road after Needles to Mount Rushmore. I would say every bit as good as the Needles. Again, great views and scenery. The Pigtails are really neat. It makes a great drive down needles, iron mountain and into rushmore.

We took the Iron Mountain Highway to Custer State Park. It was the was the coolest Mountain Road we have ever driven on!! It is 17 miles long, 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 pigtails, 3 tunnels and 2 road splits. It is truly unbelievable. My son drove it to Custer and my husband drove it back. They were both thrilled.... What an amazing road! Especially on a motorbike! There are hairpin turns, single vehicle tunnels and spectacular views at every corner. There's even a couple of curves that they call "The Pigtails" where you curl right around under the road you were just on. There's lots of traffic and plenty of slow speeds; this is not a road you can... More
