Drive from the south towards the north so that as you come through some of the tunnels you will be looking at Mt. Rushmore. its a beautiful drive with many scenic pull offs. Tunnels are small but fine for a car but not for a large RV

Don't be in a hurry as the road has a low speed limit! The scenery is great but what is best are the pigtail bridges, tunnels and switchbacks. It is worth doing!!!

We took numerous other reviewers' advice to travel this road toward Mt. Rushmore as to see the monument framed by the tunnel, and that view was definitely worth it, as were several other in-the-distance views of the carving. We got a number of good photos. The pigtail bridges were a new experience for us. We would definitely recommend taking this... More

We drove Iron Mountain Road away from Mt. Rushmore instead of to it as recommended. We still got one tunnel view of Mt Rushmore, and the pigtail bridges are really cool. Some of my family had been to Mt Rushmore before but hadn't taken this drive, and they were so glad to get to experience it this time. Well worth... More

You won't be disappointed taking this road. Fantastic scenery. Driving north toward Mount Rushmore there are a few views of the monument which are wonderful. One lane tunnels through the mountain and a very winding picturesque road. Take your time. There are many switchbacks. Don't miss it.

This is a place for all types of people. Whether their historic buffs , animal lovers or just want a nice quiet place away from the rush but close enough to a city to satisfy everyone. Check the weather a week before you go because it changes often. Would move to the area in a minute if I could.

This is a slow drive, but worth the effort. Speed won't get much over 25mph because of the many switchbacks, but the views are fabulous. Some of the little tunnels offer a magnificent frame for Mount Rushmore. There are several areas you can pull into for a great view of the Black Hills. A must-do drive if you are in... More

Take your time and enjoy each tunnel and stop often for photos. Not crowded early morning and September was a perfect time of year. We had gotten snow the day before which made it so beautiful.

We drove from Keystone into Custer State Park on this road and drove through some gorgeous country. However, after taking the Needles Highway, this takes a big back-seat to it from a scenic standpoint. The bridges and tunnels are fun, but we saw little in the way of wildlife along the road. So the Wildlilfe Loop Road in Custer State... More

This is a nice drive, though the scenery is not nearly as stunning as that on Needles Highway. The reason to drive this road is to experience the "pigtail" bridges. These bridges are engineering wonders, as they curve and change elevation. They were created to conquer the unique terrain in this area & are as pleasing to the eye as... More
