If you have time for only one drive in the Custer State Park area, take this one. If you can take only two, drive both Iron Mountain and Pinnacles. The road was engineered to be scenic. The tunnel positions were fixed first because they all frame Mt Rushmore. (Two frame it traveling northbound, the other frames it southbound). Then the... More

Got to know this road when we were in the area. You can see the presidents through a tunnel at least twice on the road. Some are really good positions. The road is in good condition although one lanes during passing tunnels.

The most unique twisty and tunnely road I've ever experienced. Great scenic overlooks and close to Mt. Rushmore.

Very scenic, pigtail bridges were cool, views through the tunnels. Unfortunately we did not encounter the "begging burros". Maybe next time. If you are in the Mt. Rushmore area, do not miss this drive!

We enjoyed this drive better than Needles Hwy. Amazing views of Mt. Rushmore when you go thru each tunnel. Just do it, you won't regret it.

We rode this on our motorcycle, the most amazing sites. Have your camera ready, as you enter the stone tunnel, Mt., Rushmore is perfectly framed!!! Just perfect!!! The Pigtail bridge is so much fun!!! You cannot miss this, if you are in the area, visit!!!

This is a beautiful drive that you must take if visiting Mt. Rushmore. The little glimpses you get of Mt. Rushmore as you travel this road are fantastic. The pigtail bridges are a wonderful sight as well as the tunnels and the split roadways. They definately make you think of camping. Beauty at it's best!!

We went a little out of our way to drive this road, based on the recommendation of a ranger at Mt Rushmore and I'm glad we did. If you want to see Mt Rushmore without having to actually stop and pay at the monument, you get some great views and photo ops from this road. But besides Mt Rushmore, there... More

This scenic highway runs from Mount Rushmore to Custer State Park. It includes three tunnels purposely engineered in the 1930s to "frame" Mount Rushmore as people drive from the state park to Borglum's gem. The governor at the time of construction, Peter Norbeck, is quoted as saying visitors should drive this highway at a very slow speed or "to do... More

This road is a must we actually drove it multiple times because of the beautiful scenery. There are tunnels that frame Mt Rushmore and pigtail bridges and very sharp curves. Not recommended towing anything. There are plenty of spots to pull over and take pictures and we even found a few to let the kids hike and climb on the... More
