This trail lives up to its description...strenuous. It is listed as being 2.8 miles long. We do a 5K several times a week and there is no comparison. The iron railings are essential to navigating the wet and slippery rocks and stairs. It is also good to have a companion along for strategizing, encouragement and support. You will not regret... Stunning views at this lake. I drove here from Mount Rushmore via the Iron Mountain Rd. It was an awesome drive and followed up by amazing sights at the lake. Scenes from National Treasure were shot here.

Such a peaceful, beautiful lake with huge boulders around the perimeter. The contrast of the deep blue water against the dark gray boulders is stunning. You can take a walk around the edge of the lake and just watch the water. Very relaxing...very tranquil. It was not crowded at all when we were there. Loved it.

We went to Sylvan lake for drinks and dinner. Really enjoyed drinks at the bar, cozy. You could also sit outside with your drink and enjoy the beautiful view. This was the "fanciest" of the lodge restaurants, jeans or casual wear was fine. Service and food were very good and the drive to and from the lodge afforded great wildlife... More

We saw beautiful mountain goats near the lake. Very relaxing area and worth the drive on a narrow mountain road to get there.

Unfortunately my visit was cut short due to rain but was glad we made the point to take a look at this unique lake with the rocks acting as a natural dam. Would love to have taken the hike around the lake. Maybe next time.

We made an afternoon visit of this wonderful and beautiful lake. There are paddle boats to rent, fishing available and a nice trail for walking. Such a scenic view, this is a great hour or two stop at least!

Sylvan Lake is a beautiful place to stop and pic nic or take beautiful hike on a number of trails. The roads up to Sylvan can be a bit scary but have beautiful scenery.

Outstanding restaurant with limited though quality menu. Excellent service, but they didn't do anything about a family group of ten or so adults and kids that thought they were in McDonald's. Spoiled the eating experience until they left halfway through our dinner. All the other customers, mostly couples like us, were relieved, too.

Don't miss Sylvan Lake inside Custer State Park. We camped at Sylvan Lake Campground which is walking distance from this lake. Take a stroll around the lake. It is a mile around the lake and you get different perpectives on the rock formations and walls as you make the loop. You can fish from the banks of the lake and... More
