If you're in the Black Hills, the drive to Sylvan Lake is one of the most stunning in the area. The lake itself is, in fact, sylvan, and there are both easy and moderate hikes around the lake and in the area that are great. I wished I'd brought a picnic and swim suit and planned to spend the afternoon.

Very enticing water as seen from the road driving by at sunset. Looks like a great place for picnics and kayaks.

We did not swim or stay here while we were on our vacation to the Black Hills but we were told that it was a must. The most beautiful spot in South Dakota and it was. The water was so blue. On our next trip we will be stopping for the day!

Sylvan Lake is a nice place to spend part or the full day depending on what you want to do. There are hiking trails in the area and one around the lake plus swimming, paddle boating and interesting scenery. We spent about half a day just hiking around the lake and taking in the scenery. This is a nice stop... More

In the early morning the waters are calm, allowing for reflections of the granite rock formations & surrounding forest. Get there before the tourists for a few quiet moments

We were supposed to have a moderate hike of 2.8 miles starting at Sylvan lake. A lot of pathways were flooded and quite hard to take. It was a challenge, certainly not moderate. A shame there were no signs warning us it may get very difficult, it would have helped us.

After a day of seeing the sites it was nice to stop here for a cool dunk. It was not that crowded and there was a bathroom to change it. Do expect the water to be cold

My son and Granddaughter went rock climbing at Sylvan lake. What a wonderful experience for them. We were able to walk along and take pictures what a priceless experience for us. The Lake is beautiful and the people very friendly. There is a fee to enter the state park but it is good for 7 days.

Spent the day hiking around this area with four kids ages 6-9. Did the cathedral spires hike which had a lot of uphill rocky paths but kids handled it well. View up top was gorgeous. Took us about 3 hours round trip. Sylvan Lake Lodge was historic and stunning. We had dinner there one evening and food was very good... More

We saw the sign and decided to investigate. What a find. There are a variety of activities from a circuit walk around the lake to boating and a lakeside picnic. The rock formations are a feature.
