Small, pretty lake set in the Black Hills area. There is a nice trail that goes around the lake that is not too strenuous if you are in "decent" shape, but wear decent shoes (not flip flops like this blockhead did!) as you will be doing some climbing and/or walking across wet stones if you wish to get to the... Idyllic small lake set amongst the Black Hills. There are cabins and boat rentals. We asked to see the interior of two of the "housekeeping" cabins (full kitchenettes) connected to Sylvan Lodge where we stayed, and they seemed very nice indeed. The housekeeper told us these cabins are all slated for remodeling over the winter. We hope to stay there... More

Our big attraction was to just visit the lake at sunset. Quite enjoyable. We dined at the Sylvan Lake Lodge and were pleasantly surprised at the upscale dining available.

Right after entering Custer State Park from Hwy 87 from Hill City we stopped at Sylvan Lake and did the walking tour around the lake. It was easy for us, half of it is a paved walk, part of the walk is gravel but there are a few places where mild climbing is necessary. We saw one lady who was... More

The short hike around the lake provides some great, unique views. The highlight of our trip to the Black Hills ! We went clockwise starting at the south side of the lake and the path was under-defined in some places but we made the right choices and were rewarded with some great views from the top of the rocks at... A bit of a drive to the Sylvan Lake area, but well worth the time! We hiked the path that goes around the lake, and the views are amazing! Great views of the wonderful rock formations in the area, and the lake itself is gorgeous!

We did the Needles Highway and came upon this lake. It is a beautiful lake that you can walk around. Lots of rock formations around it and a huge one actually in the lake. It is the trail head for the hike to Harney Peak. The day we were here was warm and there were lots of swimmers in the... More

The lake is amazing. We hiked the loop, 1st 1/4 is an easy hike, but then gets a bit sketchy for some. Well worth the effort as it takes you around the entire lake and sections with great views. Kids absolutely loved the lake. Must stop if near Custer.

One of our favorite places in our recent South Dakota Trip. Great hiking trails - challenging but rewarding. Couldn't find a campsite close by so drove the needles highway twice just so we could come back and hike a second day. On our next visit we will reserve in advance or even treat ourselves and stay in the lodge.

The rock formations are amazing, as are the hiking trails. The lake itself is great for swimming, trout fishing or kayaking. The scenery is unsurpassed in the Black Hills (in my opinion). I never get tired of visiting!
