It is a small beautiful artificial lake. The balance between water and stones are great. You might want to bring with you a fishing pole!!! Good place to spend the morning and afternoon having a picnic.

We decided to hike around the lake after hiking up to Harney Peak. The hike is easy enough and the views all around are breathtaking. My boys had fun exploring and climbing. We didn't go swimming, because everyone was tired form hiking up to the peak and it was getting late. There was a peaceful feeling there. We had intentions... More

This place is amazingly beautiful. The hike around the lake can be navigated even by the most inexperienced hiker and it's beautiful all the way around. Enjoy!!

Talk about Mother Nature at her finest ! Sylvan Lake is perfection 100%. We went in late March so there was not many people which added to the peacefulness. The weather was sunny, brisk, and cool which was enough to wear a short sleeve in the sun. We packed our lunches and sat at a picnic table right on the... More

We hiked around Sylvan Lake after Hiking Harney peak. It was a great stroll around the lake. Still too cold to go in the water, but it was so peaceful just to sit there on the rocks and gaze at the lake. We even took another trail that went down into a canyon behind the lake. Even in June there... More

I have been here twice and driven by numerous times on my way to the Needles. This is by far one of my favorites places. The view is legendary and there are tons of activities: suntanning, swimming, climbing the rocks (dont jump off into the water as you can be fined), hiking and boating. The water is cold but as... Sylvan Lake is a very beautiful, picturesque and peaceful location. It is well worth allowing time for a visit here. It is a reasonably short drive from Custer, SD. I would really recommend a visit here, if you like beautiful scenery , a peaceful location and somewhere where you are away from the crowds.

We stopped here because the Needles Highway was closed for season. We're glad we did! We opted for a short hike around the lake. Beautiful! The rock formations were a stunning backdrop for the lake. This is part of Custer State Park. State parks are treasures for us all!
