I loved the lake and enjoyed partially walking around the lake and then just sitting and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and lovely scenery. Beautiful and peaceful.

The rock formations make this lake special. We walked around one side of the lake and took pictures, but didn't walk the whole loop. There were a couple of kayakers and a fisherman on the water when we were there, and paddle boats were available. There is also a store and lodge with cabins.

If you have 3 extra hours, take the Sunday Gulch Loop off of the Sylvan Lake Trail. One of our favorite day hikes! A little tough in spots, but the scenery and views are well worth it!

Beautiful views hiking around the lake. Awesome outcrops of rocks/boulders. We saw people fishing and they were cooking their fish and shared a bit with us.

Do the hike counter clockwise. Most of the hike is easy, but there spots on the backside that are steep and rocky. This is were they got the look for the movie National Treasure 2. Lake is up to 30' deep in spots.

This lake is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. We visited on a cold, misty day, so I did not get to spend as much time here as I would have liked, but it was still enough to make it something I would recommend to anyone passing within an hour's drive of it. The scenery is... More

Small, pretty lake set in the Black Hills area. There is a nice trail that goes around the lake that is not too strenuous if you are in "decent" shape, but wear decent shoes (not flip flops like this blockhead did!) as you will be doing some climbing and/or walking across wet stones if you wish to get to the... Stopped to visit after 42 years and found Sylvan lake the same shining gem. We needed to stretch our lags and stopped briefly at Sylvan. Walking the shore line we could soak up the sun and beauty as we passed fishermen and others. Trout was the catch of the day and sunshine added to our delight. After a brisk walk... More

Idyllic small lake set amongst the Black Hills. There are cabins and boat rentals. We asked to see the interior of two of the "housekeeping" cabins (full kitchenettes) connected to Sylvan Lodge where we stayed, and they seemed very nice indeed. The housekeeper told us these cabins are all slated for remodeling over the winter. We hope to stay there... More

Our big attraction was to just visit the lake at sunset. Quite enjoyable. We dined at the Sylvan Lake Lodge and were pleasantly surprised at the upscale dining available.
