The park and the gardens were great, even in October. We were fortunate to find the toy train garden which was very unique, and the caretaker was very knowledgeable friendly. I would like to return to the park during the day sometime to stroll the grounds and visit the museum. We went for Celebration in the Oaks, recommended by a friend from New Orleans as a Christmas tradition. It was absolutely charming with lots of families, live performances, and we especially enjoyed the Cajun Night Before Christmas display. more

City Park is well worth visiting, but bring a picnic lunch if you are there mid-day. Our old map (pre-Katrina) showed a restaurant on site, but ther is no food whatsoever on the premises other than a candy bar and a soda cooler at the botanical garden gift shop. Before my husband and I visited New Orleans City Park, I looked at their website, and it was full of hepful info with directions, park maps, days and times the attractions are open, fees, schedule of events, etc. We visited City Park on a recent Sunday afternoon. This is a very large park, akin to Central Park in New York or Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. There's so much there, the sculpture garden, golf course, tennis courts, lagoons, trails, but best of all, the little train that runs around the park and the Storyland area, which is great for kids.
