I have visited this Zoo since I was a young child, it was always on the "To Do List" when my family stayed in Madison. From humble beginnings to it's current state, the Zoo has remained a free attraction. You can see the animals up close, take your time to enjoy the park setting and play on the close by... More

No elephants here, but bears and tigers and chimps and many other creatures great and small. Any nice day will see swarms of kids and people of all ages enjoying the laid-back vibe of this zoo, a wonderful free resource.

Free entertainment - any age would enjoy it. Zoo I'd well kept, the animals are beautiful, and I highly recommend it for a great family adventure.

The Vilas Zoo is a great place to spend an afaternoon with the kids. It has a children's zoo, inlding a large tree house and train ride. The great ape exhibit, tropical rain forest, and lions are all fascinating. Be prepared to walk, but foot stands and seats are available.

Please make sure you donate, even though your zoo experience is free it's nice to keep those exhibits running! That said for a free zoo, they have quite a few nice exhibits. The lions/tigers and giraffes are a big hit with my household. The train & carrousel (while there is an added expense) are also a hit with kids. A... More

Yes, it really is free, and it's a very nice place to visit even if you're childless. Now in our 60s, we don't go very often compared to when we had a small child, but we still enjoy it a lot. Don't let the "free" part deter you, as it would be well worth paying for a two or three... More

Small enough to handle, big enough to be interesting. Very child friendly. Be sure to check out all of the special exhibit buildings--snakes, nocturnal, etc. Said to be the largest free zoo in U.S. Worthy of a generous donation.

Henry Vilas Zoo is fun and interactive for kids especially, it's a must visit when the grandkids visit. It has a great display of many types of animals on a smaller scale. It offers a playground that can be as challenging as a child wants it to be. An amazing restored carousel is a great way to end the day.

Not the most amazing zoo in the world, but a very nice park with a surprising variety of animals and displays----and it's FREE! A great place for a stroll on a nice day.

This zoo has an amazing commitment to sustainability, renewable energy and preserving their land and resources. It is set in a beautiful part of the city in a very natural setting they work hard to preserve. Unlike some zoos, it feels so natural there, the animals are so loved and well cared for. We took a family group there and... More
