Wonderful permanent collection with a variety of styles and periods. We had the pleasure of watching the resident artist, Ikeda Manabu, working on a large tryptic, which I recommend if you have the time.

Chazen has fantastic permanent and special exhibitions in a beautiful building on the edge of campus. It's also free! Don't miss this on your trip to Madison.

I wasn't expecting much -- it's a college art museum, right? -- and breezed in with a 1/2 hr to spare. Wrong! This is an omnibus museum, 2 entire bldgs, 3 floors each, with art from the medieval period to now, with an emphasis on the modern. A lot of stuff you just don't see, like early modern, Dada, etc.... Chazen Museum (formerly known as the Elvehjem Museum) in the middle of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus, has a world class collection of Modern and Contemporary Art works which would not be out of place at the Tate Modern in London or the Beauburg Museum in Paris. Equally impressive is their collection of Japanese woodcuts, the core of which originated... More

Rarely brings in outstanding pieces and shows. Old art of the Romantic period or Baroque is not present very much.

I was not expecting much from this museum upon entering, but there are so many rooms with a variety of artwork. I will definitely return, since I did not make it through all of the exhibits- and they also have collections that change regularly so it's a great place to put on your Madison visit itinerary :)

For this, and two other recent visits, we had a specific reason to visit: the illuminated, handwritten Bible commissioned by Saint John's University and Abbey in Minnesota. Masterfully executed, spiritually touching and thought-provoking. We almost always spend at least two hours at each visit to the Chazen, often bringing friends. This was no different. Docents, when they are available, and... More

This was my first time visiting the Chazen and I was pleasantly surprised. The guards were extremely knowledgeable and friendly, the exhibits were varied and interesting and it is conveniently located minutes from the Capital and State Street. Even without an explicit interest in the featured exhibits or artists, it is still an excellent way to spend a Saturday afternoon

The Chazen was much larger than expected. They have a nice variety of modern and regional art. It's a nice place to spend an afternoon. You can't beat free either.
