The road from Nuwara Eliya to Kataragama is stunning. Beautiful trees, hills, waterfalls and of course tea plantations. We did stop at Mackwoods plantation and had a very interesting tour of the factory preceded by a cup of tea and a slice of yummy chocolate cake in the tearoom. Lovely visit.

I didn't like Nuwara Eliya too much but the nature and the tea plantations around it are amazing. There are beautiful waterfalls. Visit to tea factories is a must, especially if you like drinking tea.

We opted for the 12:30pm train from NanuOya to Ella so we could enjoy the 3 hr journey during daylight. Train late by 1 hr (not unusual apparently). 3rd class with no a/c tickets were fine as the temperature in the mountains is cooler anyway. We enjoyed making friends and sharing snacks with a local Sri Lankan family and a... More

The train trip is an unforgettable experience. We've been transporter in time! You will see the true Side of the country, untouched by the tourist effect. The nature is amazing, from tea plantations to teak forests, waterfalls and the more than 20 tunnels, ladies strolling on the railway to 10+ stations on the way. We took it from nuwara eliya... A "must do" is to take the train from Nanu Oya to Badulla. The scenery is stunning the whole length of the trip and includes not only the vast tea plantations but wonderfully dramatic mountains and steep sided valleys. In fact the train track is often just a meter from the edge of what appeared to be precipice. Previously I... More

A visit to Nuwara Eliya is NOT complete without visiting world famousTea gardens in and around the city. Mackwoods Tea(LABU KELLA), Blue field and such other gardens are here, NOT TO BE MISSED.

It is like visiting a British colony that still exists. Quaint British architectural designed hotels and parks. The place is cool and definitely a change from the tropical nature of the island country otherwise. Avoid old homes which pass of as heritage property or accommodations. They have bad service. The scenic lake and terrain make up for the bad lodgings.

A four hour train journey through the tea plantations. One of the best train journeys I have been on. One climbs to 8500 feet over the journey, stopping at a number of hill villages. One warning it is weather dependant and trains do get cancelled.
