We spent two nights in Nuwara Elia. Would suggest one night if not a day passing through to Ella. More than seeing a tea plantation and Lovers Leap I wouldn't say there was much more interesting?

Although we had a driver for our journey through the highland areas of Sri Lanka, we wanted to experience the legendary train trip through the highlands. So we booked tickets from Oliya to Ella [nominally a 2 - 3 hour journey], for the train leaving at 3.55pm. With the wisdom of hindsight we should have taken an earlier train, because... More

Nuwara Eliya has very few attractions. Hill stations become monotonous very quickly and Nuwara Eliya is no exception. The roads are very winding and cause A LOT of motion sickness and travelers with sinusitis will find it terrible. Entry fee to Botanical Garden here (and generally all over SL) is very high.

Tea country is stunning - and perfect for photographs. Landscape is beautiful, and you can spot locals gathering tea. Postcard experience

Climate was lovely, sunny and 25degrees and a bit cooler at night. I disliked the shops which were all stalls selling fleeces and anoraks.

Even if you don't like drinking tea, a stop at a tea estate is interesting just to understand how its manufactured. Being the country with the greatest export of tea, a tour gives you an impression of its importance to the livelihood of so much of the population. A box of Ceylon BOP will be welcomed by someone back home.
