The Truman Home, as we call it locally, is remarkable for its "ordinariness." And that's not a criticism at all. For someone my age (

Video at visitor center nicely set the stage. (Staff also mentioned Vaille House which we also saw--good suggestion.) Guide made the most of what he was allowed to show us. It would've been nice to see the upstairs as well.

Along with the museum and library, you should also make sure to visit the National historic sites and the court yard and gravesite.

You can't be lucky all the time. The house wasn't open on a Monday and there was a large wire fence all round as work is being carried out. I'd love to be able to come back one day when it's open.

For the Truman house tour, you first go to the NPS building on the Old Courthouse Square to buy tickets and optionally watch a short movie about his life. Staff at the NPS building were knowledgeable, and parking was ok. You then walk 5 blocks to the actual site of the Truman home, and stand outside the gate waiting for... More

They only take tours of eight and they sell out early, so don't try to just show up and go Still once you do get in, it is great.

First, purchase your $5 admission ticket at the NPS office a few blocks away in downtown Independence. Parking at the house is on-street only. Tour groups are kept to a small number, i believe 6 to 8 per group. An NPS guide meets you at the home to begin your tour. You begin the tour through the back of the... More

This is a great tour of President Harry S Truman and his wife Bess's family home. The house was their home away from the White House and the home they came back to after Truman's time as President of the United States. In the house there are the items that actually belonged to the president and his wife. The tour... More

A nice tour of Harry and Bess Truman's house pre and post White House. The NPS tour guide was excellent (buy your ticket at the NPS office in town). The house is exactly as it was when the Trumans lived there. There are no replicas or reproductions here. It was nice to see how Harry Truman was just one of... More
