A highlight of my long weekend in Colorado was a visit to the Great Sand Dunes National Monument. You have to cross a small creek to hike the dunes so be ready to take off your shoes or wear water shoes. Even with overcast skies the dunes were super cool. more

My Fiance and me went camping here for three nights. We went on a Wednesday so that way we could get a camp site at the Sand Dunes which is hard to get during the summer. We had a gorgeous view of the Sand Dunes.. There is tons to do here or do nothing at all. We did both. We... more

Unfortunately we only had a short time to visit this park on our way between destinations and it had snowed the night before. So, instead of seeing all the sand and the contrast in scenery with the mountains we saw snow covered sand and low clouds. The creek was still frozen over so we missed out on that too. However... more

The Sand Dunes were fantastic, I could not believe I was in Colorado! The staff was very nice, helpful, knowledgable and the visitorcenter/facilities were very clean. We were not able to camp at the campgound in the park so we stayed at the state campground about 10 miles away (do your best to stay at the Dunes if possible). After... more

This park is simply wonderful. Only by the strange twists of nature do places like this not only come to exist, but thrive. Saying that the sand dunes are hundreds of feet tall and nestled at the base of spectacular peaks cresting well above the treeline, doesn't even begin to describe it. Viewing this place is like driving down through... more

The park and campground are very nice. The dunes are amazing. The only downfall is that in the spring wind blows all the time and blows hard. Our tent site had some protection from the wind but many didn't. We hiked to the top of the dunes at 9:00 in the morning. By 10:00 the wind was blowing so hard... more

I highly recommend the Great Sand Dunes National Park. They are absolutely amazing to see, hundreds and hundreds of feet high, nestled between praire and mountains. Some words of warning- bring plenty of water, and prepare for strenuous activity- climbing up the sand dunes is exhausting. Also, check the weather. The day I went, it was incredibly windy- the sand... more

I have visited the Great Sand Dunes many times, but this is the first winter visit. It is best to visit it in the spring when the mysterious wave appears, but the winter wildlife made the trip worthwhile in January. One thing that most travelers don't know on the first visit, is that it is best to show up for... more

My family spent half of a day at the Great Sand Dunes National Park(it is a national park now) and it is the only national park where the family dog can have free reign to enjoy it too. We would have stayed longer, but a severe thunderstorm suddenly fell upon us and we left (see pictures). A oddity of nature... more

My husband and I recently returned from a road trip to Colorado. The sights of this state are numerous; each one more beautiful than the next. The Great Sand Dune National park, however, was our favorite. The Dunes are breathtaking. You can hike to the top of them and run or sled down (it's difficult to get hurt because the... more
