Great courses offered in many different areas of interest. The jewelry course I took was very good, and covered basic jewelry silver fabrication methods. There were at least 5 other courses on that weekend, and is was nice to see what other people were learning and accomplishing. Saturday night we had a Pizza Potluck, everyone bringing toppings, the staff had... More

Check out their website. The best folk school in the US located on a beautiful campus right on the shores of Lake Superior. From folk crafts and arts to sailing to wood crafting and blacksmithing to timber framing, you can learn it all right here. You'll build as many friendships taking a North House course as you will learn wonderful... More

We had a wonderful time sailing on the Hjordis Schooner for 90 minutes. There is room for six passengers but on our trip we had only four. We enjoyed the weather, ride, sailing education and facts about the area and especially Lake Superior. It cost $45 and was well worth it!

Captain was very knowledgeable on all the silly questions from the group we were with. This ship has great history and it's nice they make this experience economical ($35 for 9am sail for adults) and accessible with multiple sails per day. Definitely experience this if your interested. We wanted to take the bread baking class but wasn't offered this week.... More

Very interesting site, and truly unique. We took a morning sail on the Hjordis, and enjoyed it very much. Very relaxing, especially in calm winds. Would love to take one of the classes at the school some day!

The school, campus, and demonstrations are very well done and it is an asset to the area, however, I took the Wood-Fired Bread Baking class expecting, given the Danish tradition of the Folk Schools and the general Nordic traditions of Northern Minnesota, that it would focus on creating traditional breads from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway which would have been created... I went up in May to take a timber framing class and attend the sustainability symposium at North House and it was an amazing experience that I will never forget! Not only did I learn a TON but I found the instructors and the community to be warm, friendly and informative. I even managed to get up to Grand Marais... More

Too wonderful to describe. I can think of no other community that could create and support a wonderful learning community described by the NORTH HOUSE FOLK SCHOOL. Go on-line to their website and look at the amazing list of learning opportunities..... it's staggering. The best part of taking a North House course is the people you'll meet and the wonderful... We love North House Folk School. We've taken sailing courses, an herbalist course, Fjord Horse driving and visited during summer solstice. I think that spending time learning traditional skills and crafts is a great way to learn about the world, make new friends and support a cause that maintains and promotes a multitude of cultures. Besides, it's fun and you'll... More

North House is worth a few minutes for a tour of the attractive and interesting campus or for hours or days to enroll in one of their courses. A trip on the Hjordis, their boat, is a great extension of a typical trip to Grand Marais by allowing visitors to get out on the water and gain exposure to the... More
