We stopped by this place after having lunch at the restaurant next door. The staff were friendly and gave us the magazine that shows the classes that they offer. Inside the building are some of the items they make such as the canoe, kayak, and other items for sale at the Gift Shop. Outside are more interesting items such as... More

We have vacationed in the Grand Marais area for many years and had driven by the folk school many times. We never managed to visit until this year. Over the last couple of years I have been dabbling in blacksmithing and my wife noticed that a class on axe making was at the same time as our vacation. The class... More

North House folk school in Grand Marais, MN is a fantastic school in an even more beautiful setting. Any course taught by Jock Holman (the Norwegian Termite) will be an outstanding experience.

We came for the Wooden Boat Show weekend. There were demonstrations of blacksmithing, birch bark canoe building, wool spinning, making natural fabric dyes, basketry, net tying, and more.

I had so much fun taking a class here! The facilities are great and the teachers top-notch. I can't wait to try out something else new.

Love the whole atmosphere of NHFS. I took the Cordwainer shoe class for the second time. Love the accomodations of HNFS. The room was great, instructor and assistant were marvelous. NHFS is kinda quiet in the winter, but it was peaceful there.

Great courses offered in many different areas of interest. The jewelry course I took was very good, and covered basic jewelry silver fabrication methods. There were at least 5 other courses on that weekend, and is was nice to see what other people were learning and accomplishing. Saturday night we had a Pizza Potluck, everyone bringing toppings, the staff had... More

We had a wonderful time sailing on the Hjordis Schooner for 90 minutes. There is room for six passengers but on our trip we had only four. We enjoyed the weather, ride, sailing education and facts about the area and especially Lake Superior. It cost $45 and was well worth it!

Captain was very knowledgeable on all the silly questions from the group we were with. This ship has great history and it's nice they make this experience economical ($35 for 9am sail for adults) and accessible with multiple sails per day. Definitely experience this if your interested. We wanted to take the bread baking class but wasn't offered this week.... More
