More than just a boat ride. Board the Sternwheeler Riverboat Discovery for one of the most unique Alaskan experiences available! This three-hour cruise will take you into the heart of Alaska and introduce you to a family who has made the rivers of Alaska a way of life for five generations. You will see a bush floatplane takeoff alongside the boat, visit the home and kennels of the late four-time Iditarod winner Susan Butcher and see her champion sled dogs in action. Be immersed into the ancient Athabascan Indian culture when our Alaskan Native Guides take you on a personalized tour of the Chena Indian Village.

It was fun to follow the captain's and he's crew stories and information about the river and how the natives and settlers lived on and by the river. At the far-end of the river tour at the exhibit area were they have buildings from the old times... it was fun, they were exactly the same as the Northern Scandinavian had... More

This is a great ride down and up the river with stops at Susan Butchers Sled dog training site. You will learn things about racing sled dogs you never knew and I won't tell you here. You have to go there. You will see some reindeer and fish smoke houses and more. Snack Food on board is good. The narrated... More

Sometimes the tourist traps are tourist traps for a reason. Wading through all the seniors on tour buses is kind of really awful, BUT !!!! I loved listening to the young college kids talk at each of the stops and the narrator on the boat was THE BEST EVER!!!

Took some friends and family to this a few times, and enjoyed it every time. Sure, it's touristy, but that's part of how it's so great. The crew is enthusiastic and informative, and they all play well together. The banter is light and fun and engaging. There's also usually super-cute riverside staff on the island and doing the sled dog... More

I am a local and this was my first time on the riverboat. Don't leave until you've had a few of those blue berry doughnuts!

The Riverboat Discovery takes you down the Chena River. You get to see a dog sled team training. They talk about the rivers and how planes are a major way of transportation in Alaska. There is a sea plane demonstration. There is a mock village with a fishing wheel and salmon prep demo. There entire attraction is simulated, but it... More

Was better than expected. Watched the float plan landing and dog sled display. That was interested. The Athabaskian Indian Village was good. The stew for lunch was very good also. Glad we went on this excursion. If we get to go to Alaska again, I would like to skip Fairbanks and spend more time in Denali and at Mt Mckinley.

A Journy on the Sternwheeler Riverboat is a must. It starts as a leisurly river cruise stopping to watch float plane landing and take off as well as a dog slede display. The stop a the cultural village is informative, the guides are young native alaskan students and their talkes were both informative and entertaining. Great morning tour.

We enjoyed the Riverboat Discovery trip. It was nice, but not great. The dogsled demo was interesting and the Indian village visit was very informative. Would skip Fairbanks on our next trip and spend more time in Denali.

We drive to the river. Large complex on shore, first we were given stew for lunch on shore then a river cruise on a paddle wheeler carrying several hundred passengers. There was a commentator on the boat and there were various events happening on the banks as we passed. Dog kennels with demonstration of dogs pulling an all terrain vehicle... More
