Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was headquartered in Paris, Holland, and Germany until World War I when he opened his studio in New York City and established his country home in Falmouth. In 1955, his widow, Corinne Melchers, donated the 27-acre Belmont property to the Commonwealth of Virginia to preserve and operate as an art museum and historic site. Her generous gift included the 1790s house, the artist's studio and contents, their personal furnishings, and more than 500 of Gari Melchers' paintings, the largest collection anywhere. The buildings, gardens, and woodland trails are open to the public year round.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is one of just 30 of America's most significant artists' spaces included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios consortium.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is home to the official Stafford County Visitor Center.

Gari Melchers was, in his time, a renowned, award-winning artist. Now, he seems forgotten. However, his wife left his estate -- which is composed of his studio, his house, and other building, all located and a large and lovely piece of property -- to the state of Virginia. The University of Mary Washington attends to the estate. The docents here... More

The house & gardens are easily accessible & well maintained. What really impressed us was the gallery of his work, the professional rotation of inventory & ongoing historic preservation of his work. Knowledgeable docents wander through the gallery offering information and answering questions. Truly a wonderful time for families.

We had never heard of Julius Garibaldi (aka Gari) Melchers, but kept seeing a sign for his estate during a brief visit to Fredericksburg. A google search revealed he was a painter of some distinction around the turn of the last century and his home was worth a visit. So instead of heading home we spent another night. The attraction... We picked this attraction because of Trip Advisor reviews, but were delightfully surprised. The house was a fascinating frozen moment in time, but the surprise was the quality of the art made very real and interesting by the extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. We would definitely recommend a visit.

I have taken the official tour of the house and studio twice. Interesting history and attractive art. To be honest, my favorite visit is with my dog strolling through the gardens. I am sure to send Belmont donations on occasion because I appreciate that they welcome well behaved leashed dogs.

Stopped in at the end of the day and was pleasantly surprised. Wish we had more time to explore. We had not heard of Gari Melcher and now I feel as if I should have. The art work was amazing and the home and grounds were even better. Do not miss this even if you are not into art. The... More

What an interesting attraction! Belmont is the former residence of the American figure painter, Gari Melchers (1860-1932). The museum consists of the artist's home, gardens, the studio, and galleries. This landmarked 18th-century estate and studio are decorated with the late painter's personal artwork, collected paintings of other artists, and lovely antiques, including numerous Dutch pieces. The Melchers who had no... More

When Gari Melchers and his wife passed away, they left their home, intact with all of its furniture, art and other memorabilia to the local University of Mary Washington which overseas the current operation. Visitors are taken through the house and grounds by volunteers who tell the story of the Melchers and their lives not only in Fredericksburg (summers mainly)... More
