Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was headquartered in Paris, Holland, and Germany until World War I when he opened his studio in New York City and established his country home in Falmouth. In 1955, his widow, Corinne Melchers, donated the 27-acre Belmont property to the Commonwealth of Virginia to preserve and operate as an art museum and historic site. Belmont is a gracious home set amidst just enough gardens and pathways to not be overwhelming. But the gem is the actual studio of an Impressionist master, Gari Melchers and a rotating exhibit of his lovely works. I'm lucky enough to live nearby and can attend regular plein aire artist gatherings and guided walks of the pathways to the falls... More

Having lived in Fredericksburg for over 25 years and driving by this place on River Road, to me it was just another building. My wife and I were looking for something to do so we went to this place on a whim. Little did we know that such a talented artist lived in Fredericksburg. The tour guides and docents were... More

For the admission price of $10 you can enjoy a beautiful house tour filled with antiques and paintings, the art studio, and lovely grounds. Had I worn better shoes we would have ventured on the trails that hopefully end at the Rappahannock River. Our docent was still charmed by the house and paintings ever after 24 years of tours. The... Wonderful museum and gift shop. On the day we visited, there were Master Gardeners working in the surrounding lawns. Saw a Hummingbird Moth for the first time, all the flowers draw in the birds. Had a great time and plan on visiting again. Loved just browsing at our own pace.

Built on a hill to catch the breeze from the river. Went on a hot day and was not bothered by the heat. Had a tour of the property. The guide was able to connect the Melchers past to today. Although I enjoyed the house, artwork and metal railing stories, it never ceases to amaze me how people in the... More

I am not one to visit art galleries but Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont was wonderful. I learned a lot about Melchers and his art. The home and studio are warm and inviting. Looks as if they just walked out the door. The art work is stunning and the decor in the home is just amazing. Each of... More
