Gari Melchers was a very talented artist who chose to live on the most beautiful estate atop a hill overlooking Fredericksburg...hence the name, "Bel-Mont" The studio rivaled the studios we have visited in France of Cezanne, Renoir and Monet. He had the money to build a beautiful studio and home! His work is on display and it really makes a... More

This is a beautiful home which is furnished with all the artist and his wife's furniture and collectibles. Melchers' art is displayed in a spacious gallery on the grounds. His art is reminiscent of the impressionists with whom he painted and is beautiful. The gardens are lovely. The gift shop is very interesting with art supplies, books, and gardening supplies.... There are some beautiful paintings at Belmont and it was a very enjoyable visit. The gallery was a little musty smelling and it was good to get outside and smell fresh air after the visit.

The studio and tour of the house transported us back to the 20th century. Our guide was fantastic adding tidbits of valuable information. Well worth the time and expense.

This visit was two years ago, and was the 2nd visit in about 10 years. A worthwhile, and strongly encouraged thing to do while in Fredericksburg. A not-well-known American artist to me, the tour was great and enlightening too.

None of us were originally too excited to stop here (three in our 20's, 2 in their 60's), but it was included in our 24-hour museums/historic sites pass of Fredericksburg attrations (stop in the Visitor's Center to get it around 10/11am to fit in the most stops). So glad we went!! The house is beautiful, the grounds are lovely and... More

I knew little about the place before my visit. It is a lovely old estate with beautiful art and grounds. It's a great place to meander about and spend a morning or afternoon. Very easy access from I-95. Go!

The estate and studio of little-known American artist Gari Melchers is well worth a visit if you love design, furniture, art, or simply like looking at how the wealthy lived in early twentieth century America. The tour is guided by gracious docents who are knowledgeable and pleasant. In the studio, we were greeted by a guide who was a former... More

though a museum and artist studio, it exhibits very well the social history of the 50s. The home seems as if Gary had just stepped out because it got that "lived in feeling". Good to compare with the usual plantation building in Virginia. my wife was keen to go so I (for an easy life) agreed to go, not expecting... More

This is a beautiful, historic home filled with beautiful antiques and art. The docents were very informative, knowledgeable and helpful. We loved discovering an American artist we were unfamiliar with.
