Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was headquartered in Paris, Holland, and Germany until World War I when he opened his studio in New York City and established his country home in Falmouth. In 1955, his widow, Corinne Melchers, donated the 27-acre Belmont property to the Commonwealth of Virginia to preserve and operate as an art museum and historic site. Her generous gift included the 1790s house, the artist's studio and contents, their personal furnishings, and more than 500 of Gari Melchers' paintings, the largest collection anywhere. Designated a Virginia and National Historic Landmark in 1966, Gari Melchers Home and Studio is administered by the University of Mary Washington. The buildings, gardens, and woodland trails are open to the public year round.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is one of just 30 of America's most significant artists' spaces included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios consortium.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is home to the official Stafford County Visitor Center.

If in or near Fredericksburg, VA stop here-- it is well worth your time and energy. I'd never heard of Melcher, but he is a very interesting artist. The entrance fee includes access to his estate-- which includes his home and studio. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I consider it a "hidden gem" though there are signs for it on... More

We took a taxi from the end of Caroline Street close to the train Station but strangely the 2 taxi drivers we inquired with to take us there had never heard of Gari Melcher or his Belmont home. One of them called another taxi driver but that person had never heard of it either! Thankfully we had the address with... More

Wow, thank you so much for the heads up on the taxi drivers. We will certainly think of ways to reach out to the drivers and educate them about some of the tourist attractions "across the river." I'm glad you enjoyed your tour and appreciate the time you took writing such a detailed review our site. Sincerely, Michelle Crow-Dolby Education... More

Unfortunately, I arrived when it was closed. The House is also known as Belmont and is a 27-acre estate in Falmouth, Virginia. I researched the home and found out Gari Melchers was an expatriate artist specializing in genre painting and portraiture. I learned he was not a “starving” artist but rather earned substantial monies for his portraitures. I was able... More

To be honest, I was not familiar with Gari Melchers' art before my friend invited me to visit his beautifully preserved home and studio, just an hour from where I live. Before going, I did a little sleuthing on the internet but found when we got there, that the entire experience is designed to educate you on his life and... More

This property; on the banks of the Rappahannock River is a hidden gem. Between the art collection, the main house and the beautiful grounds, we truly enjoyed our visit.

This is a gem of a venue. My niece was getting married and the country estate of the artist Gary Melcher was the setting for an upper class wedding. Vows outside in a gazebo setting, folding chairs on a beautiful lawn, and a wonderful Great room for the dinner. The catering staff were very professional and the food was awesome,... More

The home and grounds are a museum that capture the life and times of one of the most famous artist of his time. The studio looks as if he just stepped out. The gallery features changing exhibits. The home is basically as Mrs. Melchers left it with furnishing they collected on their travels. The grounds have been restored to the... More

I was lucky enough to visit while I was a student and have seen it in multiple seasons. The house and grounds are always well maintained and the docents were incredible. I have a background in history and architecture and when visiting historic places we usually play a game when the docents have to guess at the answers. For the... More

A definite destination when anywhere close. Exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful docents. Home is well maintained and nicely furnished with period and Melchers' items. Studio has very nice selection of Melchers' work in a very well laid out and lit studio and gallery.
