Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was headquartered in Paris, Holland, and Germany until World War I when he opened his studio in New York City and established his country home in Falmouth. In 1955, his widow, Corinne Melchers, donated the 27-acre Belmont property to the Commonwealth of Virginia to preserve and operate as an art museum and historic site. Her generous gift included the 1790s house, the artist's studio and contents, their personal furnishings, and more than 500 of Gari Melchers' paintings, the largest collection anywhere. What an interesting attraction! Belmont is the former residence of the American figure painter, Gari Melchers (1860-1932). The museum consists of the artist's home, gardens, the studio, and galleries. This landmarked 18th-century estate and studio are decorated with the late painter's personal artwork, collected paintings of other artists, and lovely antiques, including numerous Dutch pieces. The Melchers who had no... More

When Gari Melchers and his wife passed away, they left their home, intact with all of its furniture, art and other memorabilia to the local University of Mary Washington which overseas the current operation. Visitors are taken through the house and grounds by volunteers who tell the story of the Melchers and their lives not only in Fredericksburg (summers mainly)... More

We had not been to Belmont for over 5 years. Tour guide was very good. House is a circa 1900 artist residence full of paintings and many Dutch furniture pieces. Studio includes artist tools of the trade and a wide range of Melchers art. Estate sits on a magnificent hill overlooking the river. Probably prettiest in spring or summer, but... More

This home is in Falmouth which is accross the river from Fredericksburg. It was built in the late 1700s and is beautifully maintained. It was the home of Geri Melchers who was a famous American Painter. The home and grounds are beautifully maintained. The view of the Rappahannock river from this breathtaking. We have visited this home in all seasons... More

This historic site has excellent guides who are dedicated to making the charmed life of Gari Melcher come to life. Gari Melcher was a distinguished New York portrait painter who commanded up to $50,000 per portrait. He preferred his beautiful home and studio in Belmont to living in New York and was able to achieve financial success and a rural... More

The art, architecture, and history here is amazing. The house has some free days and coupons available, so I do recommend trying to schedule your visit for that, but if you can't be there for a free day, then it is still well worth it. I have been there many times since I was very young.

My wife and I have passed this museum several times and finally went in. What a pleasant surprise. The guide was wonderful as we toured the house and studio learning about Melchers.. The floral garden was past its prime. We will have to return next Spring

I have been on numerous house tours, but this one was different. This one is of Gari Melcher, a painter who did many fascinating paintings. If you love art, you will love this place. The house and gardens are great also.

We walked the grounds (they were preparing for a wedding so could not go in some of the places). What a beautiful place! The house is amazing, the grounds are gorgeous. It was a beautiful autumn day, exactly what a place like this house and grounds are meant to showcase. You will love it!
