Definitely one gets the feeling of the hardship and deprivations both soldiers and pioneers on the Santa Fe Trail suffered thru. Being here 150 years ago was not for weak people. Do watch the movie and talk to the rangers- this adds to the experience.

I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to explore the fort. Allow at least a couple of hours, as there so many exhibits/displays and so well done. I loved the stories of the "people" that served there and how their quarters would have been furnished. Each building is full of great stuff! I have been to a lot... More

STONE fort that guarded the Santa Fe Trail in its heyday. Exceptionally we'll done and not at all touristy. Walking through the various buildings and across the parade ground one can easily imagine that they are in the fort c 1870s. Fine historic exhibits in each building from the barracks with rows and rows of stacked rifles and knapsacks to... More

Visited Fort Larned last Thursday. Met Park Ranger Michael Seymour. He is not only knowledgable about the Fort's history, but is a wealth of information on many historical topics and is an enthusiastic and interesting educator. We spent about three hours at the site touring all the buildings, looking at the museum exhibits and watching the a/v presentation. There's also... More

We went on a warm and sunny day with our four young children to visit the fort and had an amazing time. This historic site is appropriate for all age groups and we especially recommend it for children. At the visitors center children can participate in the junior ranger program which is very simple and can be completed while touring... More

I'm a reenactor, and i (and my husband) love to visit historical sites. Fort Larned is one of the best i've ever seen! The attention to detail is impressive, the visitors' center full of interesting relics (though small), and the entire experience a delight.

Ft Larned, or "the fort" as it is known to the locals, is widely credited as the best, most complete fort of its time and place. Place being the Santa Fe trail. Lots of events happen year long. Very well worth your time.

Have visited here a few times over the years. What a treasure! This site is one of the best preserved stone prairie forts in existence today. Exhibits in all the buildings really gives visitors insight into what fort life here was like. If you visit on a re-enact or weekend that insight is even richer. Great visit for grown ups... More

I have visited Fort Larned several times. It is still a great place to visit but the old bridge and entrance have been removed and a new bridge built, supposedly in the correct historic location. That is all "well and good" but the end result is handicapped individuals can no longer park very close to the Visitors Center as in... More

We visited Fort Larned NHS in Kansas over the Labor Day Weekend. It is a good day trip for those in the Wichita area. Over the Labor Day Weekend they had reenactors at the fort which made for a very interesting trip as they had removed some of the barriers that keep you out of the rooms. Being able to... More
