Shallon Winery is a very small, one-man operation that is open every afternoon, one to six PM, and has been for over 30 years. It, therefore, has to specialize in unique products unavailable elsewhere, such as totally wild berry wines, whey wines, Lemon Meringue Pie wine, and, Chocolate Orange wine. It is a working, functioning winery, not a wine shop. The winemaker prefers a one on one relation with his guests, which entails a brief visit and explanation in the wine making room, followed by tasting all the wines available in a sequence.Local historical information is usually included in the presentation. This visit may run from a minimum of a half hour to an hour or more depending on questions and conversation.Unfortunately, the winery can not afford to entertain larger groups, and frequently is closed to the walk-in public during the days of cruise ship arrivals. However, serious individuals or couples may call during the day for an appointment at those times.

We stopped here on a whim on our way back to Seaside, and spent the next hour or two with the proprietor. He is almost 90, so if you plan to visit, go soon, I'd say, though he seems in fine fettle. We tasted 5 wines and bought two bottles. Totally unique, fresh fruit and chocolate flavor, and NOT SWEET.... More

Thanks so much for your kind words. If you got the dry Wild Blackberry; I don't think aging this one for several years will particularly benefit it. If you got the Cran du Lait, remember to refrigerate it adequately before opening. Paul More

We stopped to visit Shallon Winery and Mr. Van Der Veldt when our cruise ship stopped in Astoria. Having read online about the place we were anxious to purchase some Chocolate Orange wine. The door was locked when we arrived and a sign said "tours by appointment". We called the number and were told to come back in 20 minutes.... More

The reference to cruise passengers was misinterpreted. I like all of my some 60,000 guests in 34 years. However, since I am a one man operation, it is not possible for me to entertain up to 2,000 visitors from cruise ships that may descend on this small town of 10,000 in one day. Previously have had to lock the door... More

We stopped by Paul's winery based on all the wonderful reviews here. We received so much more than we bargained for. Not only are his wines unique, it is evident that he is passionate about what he does and the people that go to see him. We left feeling like we had visited an old friend. It's not every day... Paul van der veldt is a man among boys in the wine making business. I don't know what I enjoyed more....the amazing wines....or the amazing stories that Paul regales you with. He's an 89 year old going on 35, with a wit and charm that is second to none. What a truly wonderdul experience. Oh, and Paul told me that... More

If in Astoria, this winery, a one man operation, is definitely worth a visit. I visited the winery with my wife, who doesn't drink, and it was a highlight of our Oregon coast road trip. The winemaker, Paul, is an interesting character who is friendly, entertaining and more than happy to give recommendations on restaurants and things to do in... More

We found Shallon Winery 10 years ago. What an experience.. when we're in Astoria, Shallon is our first stop. Absolutely the most excellent wine and Paul is a jewel. He's also a connoisseur of fine food. Just ask and he will direct you to the finest eateries in town and beyond.

The wine is very good but enjoyed the animation, history and stories of the elder gentleman that gives the tours.

We shared a combination of great wine and conversation with Paul. His passion for the wine-making is reflected in the delicious and unique flavors of wine he produces. We came home with three bottles of wine and wish we had brought enough cash for more (cash only!).

A friend told us about this unique winery and its wines, so we decided to visit next time we were in Astoria -- glad we did -- the winemaker, 88 year old Paul van der Veldt, is a delight to chat with and share his passion for making unique wines using whey and local berries -- the cranberry and blackberry...
