Shallon Winery is a very small, one-man operation that is open every afternoon, one to six PM, and has been for over 35 years. It, therefore, has to specialize in unique products unavailable elsewhere, such as totally wild berry wines, whey wines, Lemon Meringue Pie wine, and, Chocolate Orange wine. It is a working, functioning winery, not a wine shop. The winemaker prefers a one on one relation with his guests, which entails a brief visit and explanation in the wine making room, followed by tasting all the wines available in a sequence. Local historical information is usually included in the presentation. This visit may run from a minimum of a half hour to an hour or more depending on questions and conversation. Unfortunately, the winery can not afford to entertain larger groups, and frequently is closed to the walk-in public during the days of cruise ship arrivals. However, serious individuals or couples may call during the day for a suggestion for the best time, or just call the number when at the door, if it is not open.

Sign on the door said open 1-2:30 and 4-6, not 12-5 daily. No worries! It was 1:18. So, we called the number on the door as the door was locked so we followed instructions. "Mr. Grumpy" answered and was rude and brusque. We were told to come back tomorrow because he was busy. We explained that we would not be... More

Thank you for your kind words. Did not find "Kristine" in the book, but did find a Kristine J back in '07! Wow! Thanks for visiting again. More

Buying wine here is not just shopping, it's an experience. I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't understand that or read up on this place before going. The 90 year old chemist that runs this fine establishment does so with love and pride, his wines are his masterpieces and finest creations. Like any artist he does not willy-nilly release them... Went to this winery during business hours and found door locked and a note on door saying doorbell broken (see attached pic). The note said to call a number and we thought owner must have stepped out. An hour later we came back and door was open so we walked in. Owner became upset and said we needed an appointment.... Since everyone seems to have a cellphone,, my sign on the door says “Will be either working or giving a presentation; please call (the number); I will either open immediately – or tell you how many minutes.” I remember that particular day in which the door was apparently inadvertently unlocked, and I was in the middle of a presentation to... This vintner takes the time to fully explain his operation and to get to know the customer. He has been in the business many years and has developed a few very unique wines which are different. He stated that he has no interest in producing wines which are similar to others on the market. He provides a tour of the... More

Thank you for your unbiased description of my very small winery. And thanks for bringing out the “social” aspect. It makes me realize that is about my only social life in 35 years, but with over 60,000 guests. More

This is our fourth visit to the winery and each time it was a pleasure! Paul has hand crafted wines like none that you have ever tasted! NOTE: Only go to the Shallon Winery if you have adequate time to savor the wines and listen to Paul's interesting stories about his wines and the history of Astoria. We purchased 3... More

Came here today with my boyfriend. Mr. van der Veldt is bursting with knowledge, very observant and quick witted He is a man of his craft, an expert in the science and art of winemaking. It was great fun and I loved the history lesson. The wine is none like I have ever had before. A one of a kind... More

Was looking forward to visiting this winery on our trip to the coast but were turned away because there were too many people tasting? Try again later is wheat we were told. Don't waste your time going unless you know there is room.

It pains me not to be able to accommodate each guest that takes the trouble to visit my very small winery. I am a one-man operation; after 35 years and 60,000 visitors, I still like to devote my entire attention at one time to each guest or party. Everybody has a cell phone now, so if they call the number... More

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit this lovely specialty winery.Paul van der Veldt is the wine maker. His claim to fame is being on the forefront of making chocolate wine. Thank you for the comments; it was a pleasant relaxed afternoon. However, for anyone reading this, I must advise not to inquire for an appointment in advance. Just call the number from nearby - or at the door - to see if one may be received immediately, or how soon. More
