Our first trip to Gettysburg was last week, during the partial government shutdown, so we were not sure what to expect. We were told the tours were still going, but we couldn't get to many of the sites, so it was up to us if we wanted to cancel. We're so glad we didn't! Our guide, Dave Richards, was personable,... Having a licensed guide give you a private tour is the way to go. We got to ask questions and get some insight to the battles that we wouldn't have know otherwise. Our guide was extreamily informative. The money for the private 2 hour tour was well worth it and a great value.

I was fortunate that my company hosted a bus tour of the Battlefield. Terry Fox, our licensed tour guide was amazing - he easily addressed the forty+ members of our group and the four hours of the tour were a history lesson that has spurred many of us to read, check out the Virtual Gettysburg site and to make the... Our group decided to hire a licensed battlefield guide to enhance our visit to the Gettysburg NMP. Although tours can be booked through the visitors center, we decided to contact the association directly in order to have more flexibility in scheduling. (This also saves the $10 service fee the visitor center charges for booking a guide thru the center.) Upon... More

We had George Newton and he drove our car and was so knowledgeable about the war, it was incredible. George was able to answer all our questions and then some. He was also patient with us, so we could get some great photographs. A great value for the wealth of information the licensed tour guides offer. Truly obtained information we... More

We hired Richard Kohr for a 3-hr tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield. He was extremely knowledgeable and personally engaging. As a student of history, our tour became a 3-hr discussion. It was a rare treat for me, as a student of history, to be be able to have a 3-hr discussion of ideas and theories ranging that went beyond just... More

I have visited Gettysburg a number of time over the past 20 years as there is something so very sacred about this place and its importance in the history of the United States. I remember on one of my early trips there that I hired a guide for a couple of hours and had an informational tour. He was an... More

We hired a tour guide for our visit to Gettysburg. We had a very enjoyable afternoon. Fred was our guide and he did a very good job, keeping our 3 teenagers engaged. I would recommend doing this especially if you have not had time to map out your own visit. We wouldn't have had such a good time if we... More

We feel fortunate that we were able to have such a great tour with out reserving in advance. Arrived at visitors center at 7:45am and were on our tour at 8:15. Our guide was quite knowledgeable not only about the civil war, but also the French and Indian war and war of 1812. The center itself also has lots to... More

My advice? Take a tour with a living, breathing human being when at all possible. I understand that audio tours with celebrity voices (Steve Buscemi at Eastern State Penitentiary, for example) and zoomy-zoom sound effects are becoming the norm, but there is just no beating a full-on history guy/gal who has read a gazillion books on the subject and can...
