This is a great zoo for young children and short trips out with the family. The size is manageable for strollers, wheelchairs, or anyone who doesn't want to spend all day walking. They have great play areas for little kids and offer ample picnic areas for lunch breaks, even with large groups. A great day with the little ones!

I was almost going to call this review the “Little Zoo That Could” but Turtle Back is really not all that little, and it’s such a great place to experience that I would say it stands up there with other, bigger area zoos. Besides which it seems that the Essex County Parks Department is really building up this complex into... More

The Treetop Adventure Course is adjacent to the zoo and is also part of the Essex County Park System - - it should have its own TA page. Treetop shares a parking lot with the zoo but admission to the venues are separate and parking is free for both. The course has two sections for those who want adventure and... More

We visited on a blustery day in spring and for some reason, unfortunately, a lot of the animals were MIA. Still, I could see the zoo has a lot of potential, especially for families with young kids. And as far as I was concerned the visit was worth it to see two wolves up close and personal as they closely... More

Perfect size zoo. Not to big not too small. Great for kids of all ages. Animals look well cared for. Grounds are kept very neat and clean. Carousel and choo choo train and pony rides were so much fun and my daughter had a blast. Def will be back!

Although it is much smaller than most zoos, Turtle Back offers a totally unique and fun experience for adults and children of all ages. This place has undergone some major renovations throughout the years, and has become an iconic landmark in the state. Growing larger and larger each year, this place has the potential to be one of the top... More

This zoo was perfect for families. There is plenty to do and you can see everything within 3 hours. There is a train which you can ride for free. There are extra charges for feeding birds, feeding farm animals, riding ponies, riding the carousel, and looking at butterflies. We paid for feeding the animals and the carousel which was worth... This zoo is smaller than other zoos but has a good collection of North American animals. They don't have african or asian animals but the zoo is comfortably laid for easy walk and view. The section where kids could touch the rays are the most popular. There is a small train ride which is included in the ticket price. Nothing... More

My husband went to this zoo as a kid (he is in his 40s) and said it has had a total overhaul. It was a great place to spend a few hours with our 2 yr old. It is plenty big to take your time and just small enough to only stay for a few hours if a little one... More
