I was able to catch one of the holiday performances earlier this month. It is one of the largest organs I have seen and heard and I appreciated the power that it packs. It is amazing that this instrument is housed as part of a department store! (Macy's currently but used to be Wanamaker's.) If you are interested in unusual... More

Macy's did right by keeping the Wannamaker Organ in operation rather than make this flagship store in downtown Philly a cookie-cuter box store like all their others. It brings historic atmosphere, and for a guy who hates box stores this brought me in to get some gifts. Well done Macy's!

Still delightful lunch concert. A treat without calories. Just have a listen. Amazing sound and toe tapping respite from city sounds.

Very large cool looking organ, however it's on the second floor of the Macy's in downtown Philadelphia, and access is denied, so you can get some angled pictures, or stand at the opposite end of the atrium and get pics, but that's about as close as you're going to get. Apparently they play music around Christmas time which I'm told... More

What an amazing and unique experience. Even if you are not an organ music fan, it's just so very different! We actually come to Philly from Canada and would not miss hearing the organ.

The Wanamaker Organ is an old pipe organ Around the holidays there is a light show to go with the music. I return year after year to hear the music. Anyone would enjoy the show, but those with children would especially enjoy it.

Built in the late 1920's for the Wanamaker Department Store, the organ has been preserved for today's shoppers at Macy's. A magnificent instrument with pipes set along the south wall of the mezzanine, the organ fills the central hall of the store with glorious sound at noon and the early evening hours everyday. The selections range from classical to Broadway... More

The Wanamaker Organ is definitely a nice hidden destination to check out. At anytime of the year it is a marvel but especially during the holiday season. It is a relic of the glory days of the department store.
