After growing up with Close Encounters, my expectations were high. Alas, while beautiful and unusual, I hate to admit it really wasn't worth the extra 1 1/2 hours of driving to get there. Part of the problem is that we were relocating hotels that day with another 4 hours in front of us, so our time was limited. If you... more

Seeing it from a distance is special to drive up to it and walk around it leaves with a memory that you will never forget, you can see why the Indians worshipped this monument and to think natures awsome force pushed this rock to the surface is mind boggling. more

It was a long drive just to see this. We took pictures but didn't actually go into the national park. You could see it from quite a distance and then you kept getting closer. The kids enjoyed the interesting stories on how it came to be. If you are driving on the way to Yellowstone it might be worth it... more

I'm not really too impressed by big rocks, so this didn't excite me very much, but I can see how some people could really enjoy it. If you are driving from SD to Yellowstone, this will add another 1.5 hours to your drive. The only two things that made the drive worthwhile were the prairie dogs along the road, and... more

We loved this place! You can see it from miles away and it just keeps getting bigger the closer you get to it! You can't actually climb it unless you register, but there is a nice trail that circles the base of the tower. It is hard to believe how the tower was made! Impressive! There is also a prairie... more

No need to add photos to this, as the existing ones here cover the monument well. Devils Tower is an interesting formation which is viewable from several miles away. Although I am not a climber, I can see why it is a mecca for the activity. The park area is very nice, with a scenic drive around it to the... more

I wasn't as awed by the initial view of the tower as some others have been. We approached it from the south (Sundance, WY), so perhaps it is more impressive coming from the NE. But once we got there we were very impressed. The facilities are nice and the upper path around the tower is in excellent shape. It was... more

You've seen pictures of this, or at least in the film, Close Encounters, but it is much more spectacular in person. It is so unique that it's worth the trip if you are anywhere in the area, including driving up from the Black Hills like we did. There is an easy 45 minute paved path around the Tower, it looks... more

A very nice stop and visit. It is beautiful and breath taking. The rangers in charge make it very interesting. The trail around the tower is very invigorating. Definitely, worth that turn off the highway. more

August, 2008, my daughter and I went to the Devil's Tower National Monument again. Seeing it in the movies and photographs do not do the Devil's Tower justice. The forces of nature again have made a sculpture of beauty and uniqueness not seen anywhere else on Earth. Not wanting to make the error of our first trip here, we took... more
