A few years ago the national park service closed mine to the mine due to "safety concerns". Sounds like a load of mumbo jumbo to me! Most likely the park service was worried about damage from overuse, as it was one of the prime attractions in Death Valley. Since a barrier has been put in place driving to the mine... More

back in its day, this mine produced a lot of gold ore.... but the ore is at the top of the cliff, and the amazing cable and bucket system to get it down from there is still in good shape. However, there are hazards that the NPS is working on, so the whole area is closed at the moment.
