AWESOME tour guide, let me tell you. As a Columbia student it's so easy to ignore the vibrant community that is right next to us, but through this tour I bet you'll leave knowing that Harlem is the true hub of jazz, spoken word, art, and history in Manhattan. Yeah, I said it. Harlem baby. "This? Yeah, MLK Jr. spoke... more

If you have been wanting to visit Harlem, I highly recommend booking a walking tour with Neil at Harlem Heritage Tours. Tel: [--]. They have a great web site that outlines the various walks. We went on the Civil Rights Walk. We also heard much about the present, how Harlem began and the many people who have lived here. Walking... more

My mum and I took this tour in late August/ early September. It was only the two of us on the tour. Neal was amazingly passionate, interesting and insanely generous with his time. We learnt heaps and really felt like we experienced the spirit of Harlem. The tour, to us, was worth so much more than what we paid. Thanks... more

This was an exceptional experience with a well-informed, erudite, scholarly and very professional tour guide. Neal was very accommodating to the point of answering questions and taking us places which were not a part of the tour's itinerary. Moreover, his knowledge of Harlem history that predates his age is a clear indication that he has done extensive study and research... more

Neil Shumaker, the owner of the tour company was our guide and his knowledge of Harlem and its history is extensive...he was born and raised there and returned after college graduation. Neil provided a detailed description and history of each sight on our two (+) hour walking tour which concluded with a visit to the Apollo Theater. Great tour ! more

This was an awesome 'tour' partly because it doesn't feel like a tour. Neil was awesome- a wealth of knowledge and all round good guy. He was also adaptable and could point us to other things to experience around the neighbourhoods. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an authentic experience rather than looking at people through a looking... more

This two hour walking tour in Harlem was simply amazing. During a week of seeing all the attractions and museums, this insightful history brought all of the city to life for us. Harlem is overlooked and deserves the attention of anyone interested in history and how this important city has dealt with social issues through the years. Our tour was... more

My family and I went on a Harlem tour guided by Neil and it was absolutely terrific. We had a choice of focusing on jazz, gospel, civil rights, and we requested a mixed bag. It was both educational and fun. We're from Canada, and our daughters, age 10 and 12, had learned about Martin Luther King, and Neil made it... more

New York is not just Lower Manhattan. If you really want to know something about the history of the city and the country as a whole, go to Harlem and take a guided walking tour done by a local. He provides you with lots of interesting information, is able to answer any question and you will visit some pearls from... more
