We had always heard of Harlem but never been there and knew little about Harlem. When our 88-year-old energetic tour guide Andy got through with us, that was no longer the case!! What a delightful and knowledgeable man! Having lived in Harlem since 1958 (one of only 5 black students at Columbia Univ. at the time,) Andy has lived through... More

the tour goes to some attractions in Harlem but the main one is the ARC church and the mass is devoted and run by former drug addicts who are now recovered. so you get to hear them singing (which is very beautiful) and you get to contribute to a very good cause. Highly recommended.

Highly Recommend! I worked with Joseph in advance and explained I was looking for a walking tour for families with children 6 to 9 years old. Joseph modified the time of the tour to 90 minutes and also arranged for our group to immediately dine at Amy Ruth's following our tour (walking distance of the center). The food was delicious... We booked ahead for the two-hour Harlem Renaissance walking tour. We arrived at the designated location on 116th St., only to learn that we instead needed to go 20 blocks north to another location at the NYC library. Of the 14 people on our tour, more than half had the same experience, and dribbled on, so that a tour supposed... More

We had a great experience in Harlem seeing the city housing development where our tour leader grew up and talking about the conflicts and opportunities that gentrification creates (there is an expensive high rise condo close by), visiting a little music venue, learning about the beautiful brownstones and exclusive buildings built at the turn of the century, learning about the... To visit Harlem of now we couldn't pass on the opportunity to visit a gospel service complete with a walking tour. To our surprise Neal was full of passion, pizazz and has a lovely friendly disposition, this is his neighbourhood and he's so proud of that which is apparent when we are walking around. His use of his iPad is... More

I have to say I was a bit apprihensive whilst I was on the subway to Harlem. The area has a reputation of being dangerous but after a few minutes of being there I realized it was safe. Me and my girlfriend really enjoyed our Gospel walking tour of Harlem. The tour started with sunday mass at the Canaan Baptist... More

I attended this tour with my husband to add some culture and education to our vacation. It was the best ever, who knew an 88 year old man could move so fast. It was clear that Mr. Andy enjoys what he does, is knowledgeable about the area, and is a kindred spirit. Despite an unruly woman threatening him, because he... More

Neal Shoemaker took the Columbia journalism students on a tour of Harlem and by the end of the tour, the students were excited to explore the area even more. Neal was super enthusiastic and was willing to answer any questions.
