The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ « less

My husband and I attended the show with three boys, ages 8, 13 and 14. The boys loved the show, and my husband and I enjoyed it as well. Our seats were in the first row (AA) of the lowest mezzanine. And, although the sightlines were great, the leg room was a little crazy squished (even for two adults who... More

The show was very fun and my nephew loved it. Unfortunately the show has closed now so you will not have an opportunity to see it.

A really fast paced musical - we went with a 9 year old, two adults and two OAPs and everybody loved it. Really interesting for Europeans as we weren't aware of the history of New York publishing. We chose a musical we felt was unlikely to transfer to London.

Sadly, this show has come to an end. All 3 of my kids (9, 12, 14) loved it! Lots of energy, not ALL singing, great dancing. Very entertaining.

Going to miss this play! It was my first Broadway play and what a great one to start out with! The singing and dancing was great and while the musical diverted slightly from the movie it was all for the better. It provided a more natural transition song to song, all of which were great! One of my favorite part... More

Great show! We loved both the songs and the dances. The theatre is small, and we were worried that we'd have trouble seeing everything from our seats on the second level, but it was perfect. We got a laugh at the teenage/twenty-something girls in the audience were swooning at the dancers!
