The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ « less

Loved this show! So glad they were playing on a Monday night - it was our only night open and it was excellent.

Brought my family to this, and the children (12, 10 and 8) loved it. Lots of activity and dancing, and happy endings, which was perfect for them. Story was a bit light, and no amazing songs, but fun for adults as well. Would recommend for families.

This is a great show to showcase strong male singers and dancers. The story is easy to follow and the dialog is funny. A great show for boys to see and appreciate Broadway.

i attended with my granddaughter (5) and was pleasantly surprised that they had booster seats for the younger children to sit on which made it so that she wasn't stuck behind someone that she couldn't see over It kept her attention with the dancing and storyline. We had a great time. It started a little late for her so she... More

This was a really great show for all the family and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The theatre itself is really beautiful but be warned, the wait for the ladies restrooms was crazy. They seem to only have one set of restrooms for the whole theatre and so I would encourage you to run out just before the interval if you... More

If you need to take kids to a show in NY - this is the place, The dancing was fabulous - both choreography and capabilities. No need to sit up front because the action is on three levels.

Loved it! The dancing is nearly non-stop and is just fantastic. If you're looking for something with a really involved storyline and message perhaps this one is not for you but if you're a dance enthusiast and like a show with high energy, this is a great one to see. Amazing athleticism of the dancers working on a set that... More

A wonderful, uplifting musical. Choreography was outstanding. This is a cult classic, if the audience could, I believe they would be dancing in the aisles.
