The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ « less

And the Broadway play did not disappoint! The storyline was changed but the dancing and singing was not a miss. The main star (Corey Cott) was absolutely wonderful - if you love good looking men with singing / dancing / and acting talent - this is a must see!

When the Jewish gentleman says something as he leaves the dining room where he serves the homeless, Jack says: "Why do old people talk?" If this were not insensitive enough, the youths in the audience clapped and cheered, much to the disgust of rest of us, for whom the show and the character of Jack were greatly diminished.

Started slow but drew us in for a cute, lively dance filled show. Talent was very good and we enjoyed the girls screaming for star Cory Cott. We were really fortunate to get row g orch seats at tats and they were worth the dollars. The theatre crowd left smiling

This musical basically follows the storyline of the Disney movie by the same name. Lucky for you, the Disney movie was almost designed to be perfectly transitioned into a wonderful Broadway show. The set was clever and the show was well done. Acting was great. No complaints; it hit all the notes of entertaining and delighting me.

The cast is fantastic and the show is worth to see. It was my first show when I arrived to NYC for my vacation trip and I highly recommend it! The theater feels a little cramped as it is very steep but you are very closed to the stage an all seats seem to be very god.

We bought tickets from the cheap kiosk for a matinee. Long queue so glad we got there with 30 minutes to spare. Great show all round, dancing, singing etc. Great storyline as well. Our two children 12 and14 loved it as well.

Great story line and entertaining. Primarily an all male cast with a female. I liked the message of standing up for what you believe in. The evening we saw it, many female theatre goers outside in the rain waiting for the cast to give autographs

We enjoyed the matinee today with our family of four. The show was interesting an we liked the singing and dancing. I didn't really know what to expect before seeing this. But it was a really entertaining. The cast was good and the story was about the turn of the century newspaper carriers organizing against Pulitzer. I would recommend this... More
