This is a short walk from Union Square park and an awesome neighborhood for shopping. The book store is 3 stories of new and used books. I dare you to leave without a book. So much fun to look around. If you like books, you have to go here. A short walk from the subway.

Could've stayed in here all day! What a fantastic place and so sad that it's a dying breed. Couldn't find a single other book shop in NY but Strand made up for it tenfold. This is how bookshops should be. 18 miles of shelves apparently!

In my little suburban bookstore, the philosophy section is like 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide, with empty spaces. At Strand, this section is humongous. My intellectual'ish 17 year old son who reads Nietzsche, Sartre, Foucault, etc., was in heaven. Sure wish we lived closer!

Miles and miles of books in classified areas, some heavily discounted. Kitschy tote bags. Great books pointed out by staff signs. All together you fall into daze and enter book heaven here.

Spent a good two hours browsing through the store. We loved looking through the old and rare books at the top floor. The staff were very accomodating and friendly. I came with my adult son who is special needs and loves to collect old books. He had such a wonderful experience.

If you are a book lover, this is a must visit in New York (worth making the pilgrimage from Jersey City too). Even if your budget is low, you can get great and sometimes rare books on the carts outside at throwaway prices.

Strand has a huge variety, great recommendations, cute tote bags, and reasonable prices. It's cool to browse, and it's neat and organized so you can also make it quick and easy. It's a nice place overall. The go-to bookstore that's on the bigger side of the spectrum.

Strand is an impressive bookstore, one that is on the top of any shopping list while in Manhattan. It's a bit overwhelming with the big selection and multiple floors. We could get lost in there and practically did, and found many neat knick-knacks along the way. What we didn't find was books. There were some I wanted to find, but... More

The Strand Bookstore is one of the most overrated bookshops I have ever seen in my life. Second-hand books are terribly expensive (try the sellers in Washington Square on weekends, great books great bargain) and the staff is amazingly unhelpful and not very knowledgeable, to put it mildly, Jorgeis the nastiest of all. A friend of mine, who was leaving... More

A landmark and haven for bibliophiles and others who like delving into books (and not just best-sellers), the Strand is a wonderful place for those who love to read and also to feel a book’s cover and paper which are, to me, part of its soul. Definitely better than going onto the ‘net to purchase books, going to the Strand... More
