This is my second tour with context travel. I love a good cocktail and this walking tour sounded perfect. Richard the docent was extremely knowledgeable and a very engaging speaker. There were a couple of stops around mid-town before a ride on the subway downtown. We finished in a tiny bar that was just fantastic. The cocktails were sensational! Definitely... More

I am currently a freshman at Columbia University in New York. I'm from Philadelphia, so I love exploring NYC and learning more about it. I took the Context Travel Architecture of New York and Brooklyn Portrait of a City walks and absolutely loved them! Context is amazing. The groups are so small that you really get to interact with the... More

In a discretely small group of 6 persons and with a cunning scholar guide we really took in many stunning buildings and their interiors, many of which we wouldn't have access to on ourselves. The East 42nd Street route was rich in styles and history as well as present function came alive.

Other than allowing a client to be physically injured, the worst mistake a tour company can make is to pull a "no call/no show" and leave a client stranded as the Context guide did to us on September 3, 2014. We had scheduled and paid for the Context Walking Tour of the High Line/Meatpacking District for Friday, September 3. We... More

I took the Context Travel Architecture of NYC Tour on a beautiful sunny day in March. The small group of people on the tour were interesting and fun to spend a few hours with learning about the iconic buildings along 42nd Street. Our docent, Hansel, was insightful, engaging and very knowledgeable about architecture and the history of NYC. It was... More

We did this tour on Christmas Eve and it was wonderful. We started at the United Nations end of 42nd Street and worked our way westward, stopping at all of iconic buildings on this famous street. Ford Foundation Building, Daily News Building, Chrysler Building, Chanin Building were all visited and explained in depth by our great guide. We also visited... More

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour last weekend. It was a bit brisk (it's November after all!) but we found it to be a highlight of our trip to the city. Our guide, Meisha, was knowledgeable and very entertaining. I would recommend this to anyone travelling to NYC. This is our second experience with Context Travel walking tours... More

My wife and I took a tour of the Meatpacking District and the High Line Park on Labor Day 2013. Our docent, Matico Josephson, greeted us outside the Chelsea Apple Store and the next 5 hours could not have been more enjoyable. Matico was informed and engaging! He explained that Context provides personalized tours and information that are tailored to... More

We booked a private family tour of moma which lasted for three hours. Our guide, Monica, was fantastic. We are a family of five with children aged 15, 13 and 8. We saw some moma highlights but in a way that told the story of modern art. If we had toured by ourselves we would have got 5% of the... More

Our guide Matico was absolutely the best. Knowledgeable, easy to talk to, passionate, interesting and able to incorporate our interests into the tours. Our Context tours were the most expensive activities we participated in on our trip but may have been the best value, which is amazing. The perspective that our first tour (which was on day two of our... More

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighborhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of the city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets - much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighborhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being home to a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
