Take the 1 line to the end (South Ferry). Walk across the street to the ferry terminal, just next to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. The fare is free at some times in the morning, $1 for seniors round trip, and $2 for others. You can take your bike. The island has fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline and of... More

I love this place. I've been a few times and I love the large lawns, activities for kids, beer garden, etc. This trip, however, we were scared from spot to spot by very aggressive wasp. I won't be going back until I know this is no longer a problem.

We were primarily interested in seeing the historic buildings. Unfortunately, many are not open to the public yet, and those that are often are in disrepair. The grassy areas had been mowed, but the interiors of houses that were open were clearly not ready for prime time, with peeling paint the rule. There were a few picnic tables (very few)... More

The ferry there costs $2 and runs every half hour. And this was the highlight of the trip - 5 minutes ride to the island. The island itself is beautiful and there is a great view on Manhattan and Statue of Liberty, but there is nothing really to do there. Few houses you can visit (they are all the same),... More

The island is a short ferry ride away. The ferry is close to the Statin Island ferry. The lines are long, but everyone gets on. The ferry leaves on the half hour, you can bring your bike. They also rent bikes including four wheelers that hold 2/3, 4, or 6 people. The Island has some new landscaping, and in general... More

A quick ferry ride( $2.00 RT for adults, 1/2 price for seniors) from lower manhattan takes you to a beautiful island that contains a fort, historic buildings and wonderful art galleries that are both indoors and out. They have free tours, miles of bike riding paths and rentals.. There are picnic tables, very child friendly, places to buy food and... More

Took myself off to Governors Island this weekend not only to check out the unicycle festival but to get in my walking excercise by taking the path that goes almost all the way around the Island and offers the most incredible views along the entire path. The festival was fun as I watched so many people try to navigate on... More

Visited New York over Labor Day weekend and decided to check out Governor's Island. This is a great place to spend some time away from the fast pace of the city and it's only $2 round trip for the ferry. There were several food trucks set up for the weekend plus a bike rental place.

My family spent a few hours enjoying the grounds of Governor's Island. It was the first time in a while we felt comfortable with them running off all of their energy "semi" unattended. There also food trucks that provide a variety of dinning options. It was a great way to start the day.
