I LOVED Governor's Island! It almost felt like we were on holiday, it is so quiet and peaceful. No cars are on the island so you can just stroll around at your own pace. There are lots of activities during the season, with concerts, art installations, things for children and there are plenty of food trucks if you get hungry.... More

We have visited Govenors Island over the last few years but this time it has so impressed us! We wandered round, could have hired a bike but decided to walk, it's amazing what they have done to this little island.. Hammocks, parks, food, mazes with the pathway and at the weekend a little beach with a bar. You do not... More

We went to Governor's Island as a quick getaway from the concrete jungle for a few hours. The ferry ride was short and sweet. We rented bikes, and my son had the tag-a-long bike with my husband. He felt like a big boy without training wheels, plus he didn't have to pedal all of the time. It's a great place... More

We took a jaunt here on a beautifully sunny and warm July day. The ferry ride from the lower Manhattan Battery was very inexpensive (even free on the weekends) and only took 7 minutes. The Island has a long military and social history which dates back to before the Revolutionary War: protecting the NYC harbor, prison for Confederate soldiers, U.S.... More

Just a short ferry ride and you feel like you're in another world. Rent a bike and you explore the entire island. There's always a special event and/or art installation to see.

Want great views of Brooklyn, New Jersey, the Statue of Liberty AND of Manhattan? This is the place to be. Add in the miles of biking/hiking, historical buildings and hammocks. Well, this island has it all. Well, except good food options during the week. If you come Monday-Friday you probably want to eat first or pack a picnic basket. I... More

I can't believe I had not been here before. Beautiful National Park property with historic forts (a personal favorite), beautiful grounds, summer art projects going on, and a wide variety of snacking options. The round trip ferry ride is only $2. Lots of wide grass areas for picnics. Amazing place at an amazing price. Great get away right at the... More

Great place to explore early in the morning on a weekday. Two dollars round trip ferry ride. The company Blazing Saddles has free bicycle rentals between 10am and 12 noon (free for one hour rental) during the week. That is the best way to really explore the island. As a visitor, you can not bring your car, alcohol and no... More

This place is beautiful and soooo quiet. The boat ride is 2$, 7 minutes and it is so relaxing to be in such a quiet place away from the city. the atmosphere is very much like an empty university campus.
