Great for getting out alone or with friends and family. The trust is continuing to add new fun things to do on the island. There is basketball, baseball, large fields for random sports. Plus a great view of NYC. It is free for selected times on the weekend and only two dollars round trip during the week. You can easily... More

Of course, I have to complain first. There aren't any bathrooms! Just really awful and dirty Porta Potties. When I went there, the actual bathrooms (with running water), were all out of order or they closed really early. Trapped on an island with tons and food and drink but no sanitary bathrooms...it must be awful for parents of young children... More

This is a great place. The short ferry ride over is only $2 and you get great views of the city. There are bikes to rent, picnic areas, things for kids to do, hammocks to relax in and many other things to do. Views are spectacular and there is also a Food Court if you didn't bring a picnic lunch... More

This is a wonderful place to spend the day. If you are a "foodie" there area has a vast array of food trucks with every type of food you would want to consider. The ferry ride is only 2.00. The park was designed for families and children. You can also walk around and see the old fort (which at one... More

Our 3rd trip to nyc but first time to governors island. We took the 2$ return pedestrian ferry from the pier adjacent to the Staten Island dock and came back the same way, though a Brooklyn return is possible from a second GI pier at no additional cost. Bike rentals are available through an outfit called blazing saddles (a play... More

A someone who lived on the island, its been interesting to see it change. Its in a continual state of evolution - some good, some not so. All in all, its still a largely overlooked site, yet totally worth a visit - you won't believe you're in New York City!

Though no longer undiscovered, this oasis close to the city is a paradise for a relaxing weekend day. Take the free ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn in the early morning and beat the crowds that take over by lunch time. The island is very walkable, so unless you love bikes, just use what your momma gave you and hoof it.... More
