Viewed the Island from the ferry tour and the place looks like it is filled with many historic relics. Saw a couple of canons on the fort wall and a number of historic buildings on the island. From my experience I'd say it's better to actually get onto the island and experience the history of this beautiful island.

I went to see the French carousels with a group. I was surprised by all the history on the island and all the food options; we all had a great time.

This island was for the "benefit and accommodation of His Majesty's Governors." You can go into some of the buildings and get a sense of the island's history. Governors Island is a wonderful oasis. It is interesting that on such a tiny island there are varied "districts". There are hilly, park-like areas, historic residences with a Southern feel, army apartments... More

Governors Island is a 173 acre Island situated at South side of Manhattan part of NYC.Historically this Island was a Cost Guard installation for many years and an Army post for nearly 200 years. Reminisce of the same can seen everywhere on the Island. From April 2010, New York City took over the Island and a major part was developed... More

Only opened to the public recently (last three years) and only open on selected days in nice weather. Take the free ferry and have an expectedly wonderful time. The best views of Manhattan. Simply walk the perimeter road (or ride a bike).

First enjoy the boat ride, then take in NY harbor from this historic island. Rent a bike, walk around, enjoy the vistas, share a frisbee. People watch. It's an inexpensive way to enjoy being in NYC.

The vaycay feeling starts on the (short) ferry ride from lower Manhattan (or Bklyn). It feels like you've left the bustle of the city immediately. The island can be explored in a day, but on repeat visits you will find something new. Don't miss the tour of the fort, with federal park rangers (great hats) & wonderful views of Manhattan.... It's a place to go to when the weather is warm and the breezes are not the fierce winds off the water in winter. Special events, art exhibits and the like are the main reason I choose to go to the island. The view when you can sit and relish it during the warm months is beautiful. The harbor, lower Manhattan and... More
