Governors Island, a world unto itself, unique and full of promise. For almost two centuries, Governors Island was a military base - home to the US Army and later the Coast Guard, and closed to the public. In 2003 the federal government sold 150 acres of Island to the people of New York, with the Island's governance and funding jointly... More

Governor's Island is a beautiful hidden gem in NYC. A short ferry ride and you arrive at an island that gives you amazing views of the skyline, Statue of Liberty, and even NJ. It's a perfect place to have a picnic, go for a jog/bike ride or just walk around. Whether you're with your friends, family, or on a date,... More

Bring your bike on the free ferry in summer. Historic fort and homes to see and visit. Tour the island on the surrounding bike/pedestrian path and watch harbor traffic of commuters and other boats. Views of Downtown Manhattan, Statue of Liberty, Seaport, and bridges.

I spent 4 months in New York last year, and one weekend decided to check out Governor's Island. When I got to the (free) ferry I was surprised to see so many people dressed like they had just jumped out of the Great Gatsby. As it turned out, it was the annual Jazz-Era fest, and it was truly spectacular to... More

took the ferry over to the island and enjoy exploring. Not really crowded and relaxing as one walks around exploring the old fort. That s what I was interested in, and was not disappointed. Well maintained by the National park service. Nice place for a relaxing picnic while looking at Manhattan across the water. Good place for photos. Not a... More

We were so happy we got to go over on one of the last weekends of the season. The weather was wonderful and we really enjoyed waliing around and checking out the art exhibits in the old officer housing. We went and enjoyed lunch overlooking the water from the schnitzel food truck. We will deffinently be back next season.

History buffs will love the military back story and presence so close to one of America's greatest cities. National park aficionados can collect another stamp. Couples will like the ability to wander around (or rent bikes) in private. Families with kids will like the picnic areas, play places and open spaces. Pick a nice early or late summer day, plan... The island is equipped with all that you'd need for a comfortable day out, food (various options and reasonably priced), toilet facilities (not the greatest but fine), and you can walk, bike, sit or lay in a hammock. On weekends at certain times you can get free ferries, otherwise the fare is really cheap (I think $2) ... the island... More

I went to Govenors Island and it was really nice. The ferry ride was really nice. You can bike and walk on the island. There are two forts and great history. If you go to New York go to Govenors Island.
