Everybody knows about Staten Island, but until last week I'd never heard of Governor's Island, a one-dollar ferry ride from Manhattan. Administered by the National Park Service, this former fortress and prison island is now host to art, drama, and music festivals all summer. The Sunday afternoon we visited, nothing was going on, which was even better in some ways,... More

A local suggested we try Governors Island as somewhere quiet for a day trip , picnic etc and away from the hassle of Manhattan. Good advise . A $2 ferry ride from Battery Point , 10 mins and your there on what is essentially a National park .Its very historic with many old military buildings and a fortress but now... More

This venue is only open at weekends and serves as a popular recreation area for families. At time of our visit there were many activities taking place and a carnival atmosphere prevailed. It was the former site of UK Governor's residences and accommodation and well worth a visit on a sunny day. I believe no one actually stays on the... More

It is really refreshing visiting this oasis. Although you are a mere 800 yards away from NYC by ferry, you are in another place. No crowds, no trash on the walkways, and wonderful views. There are really good food trucks on the island. Walkways are in great condition and you don't have to worry about cars. You just have to... More

The island was wonderfully landscaped and the buildings were all quite interesting. It is a great place to get a good view of the statue of liberty.

Governor's island could probably be interesting when there is something to do. On a thursday morning in june it was deserted (except for some groups of school kid camps) and 95% of buildings were closed with a big lock on the door. Not very attractive.

Went to Governor's Island for the Jazz Age Lawn Party. Since the event was pretty crowded I explored the island a bit. Hard to believe this gem is so close to Manhattan! Nice escape the city to catch the breeze off the water and smell the salt air. Free and quick ferry from Manhattan and only a few bucks from... More

Governor's island is just a 5 minute ferry ride away from downtown Manhattan. The ferry is free at 10 am and 11 am after which there is a 2$ fee.The island is only open in summer (weekends only) and the last ferry back is at 6pm. Its a great place to go with friends, carry a picnic lunch or choose... More

The Ferry taken over to the Island is super quick. Spent the day here and we ate from the food trucks. Rented bicycles and walked for hours looking at the beauty of very unique park. You can clearly see the Freedom Tower along with the Statue of Liberty. You can even see cruise ships pass by. Plenty of things to... More
