Governors Island (from the royal governors hosted here) was, for almost 200 years, a military base and was open to the public quite recently. Besides activities like biking, picnicking or visiting the newly restored Castle Williams, the highest value of Governors Island is, for amateur or professional photographers, its position at only half a mile (800 meters) from the southern... I've always had a memorable time at Veuve Clicquot's Polo Classic each year from 2009 on Governor's Island. It's a celebrated event where attendees -- some more enthusiastic than others -- dress in their polo garb, enjoy a nice day and rub elbows with the who's who. It really put the spotlight on GI. The VCPC is now held at... More

Governor's Island is a small speck of land south-east of Manhattan's southern tip, just off Brooklyn; the island is run by the National Park Service. Here are 2 visually impressive forts from the early 19th century - Fort Jay, in the interior of the island, which has a fine entry gate; & the rounded Castle Williams. There are also several... More

We visited this attraction with our young children in the summer. It was a wonderful and pleasant way to spend the day. We were lucky that they had a French festival this past summer. We enjoyed trying out all the antique amusement rides. Even without the festival there was really a lot to do on the island. There was bike... More

You take the boat which is for free and end up in a nice and quiet place full of trees and birds. You get the best view of New York City. You can eat nice food from a far away country and then have an ice-cream cone while walking alond the water. Great Saturday!

It's a little known secret that you can get to Governor's island for free from Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan, starting 10am. From there, you get an amazing view of Manhattan skyline and perfect place to picnic and cycle. If you didn't bring your own food, there are... More

My whole family loved Governor's Island. From the Staten Island ferry we exited and about a half block more on the left was the terminal for the Governor's Island ferry. The ferry to the Island was really cool and sort of like a speedboat ferrry. Once on the Island one might see the very old buildings and farms there, but... More

We travelled on the free ferry on the last weekend of summer. Fantastic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Jersey. Couldn't get much information apart from the notice boards and feel we missed much of the history of the place. We didn't see anybody offering guided walks although there were a lot of guides close to the newly planted parkland area-... More

After the ferry, I went to the Welcome Station and bought a $1 map of Governors Island. I walked to Castle Williams (a fort completed in 1811) and joined a free guided tour of the Castle. The guide, a Park Ranger, explained the history of Castle Williams. He took us up several flights of stairs, stopping on each floor to... More

Free ferry from lower Manhattan, free art exhibits, free admission to the forts. What could be better? Plus plenty of places to just chill and let the breeze blow through your hair while drinking a Brooklyn Summer Ale! Recently spent almost 5 hours there this past Saturday and could have stayed longer if only the ferry wasn't leaving! They had... More
