Wow, what a find. I knew this place existed but we found ourselves on the East River ferry (another new service?) heading south to Brooklyn and decided to stay on for the hour it took to get to Governors Island. We couldn't have picked a better day as there was an art exhibition going on, numerous street food vendors and... More

I love visiting this small island with my husband. $2 Ferry available from Brooklyn, less then 15mins ride. There is plenty to do for couples and families. I enjoy the tree lined walks. No crowds. Very very clean. Benches available on walkways. There is a bathroom facility on the island with washrooms. Food truck vendors are your average priced food... More

I visited Governor's Island for an art show and was amazed that this gem of a location was available all summer. The ferry was reasonable at $2 return trip and there was a huge park. You could rent a bicycle if you did not have your own and explore the island or explore on foot. The wide expanse of spaces... More

Governor's Island is not open to the public all year round. Work is currently being undertaken to open more areas of the island, so it will be interesting to return in the future to see how the work has progressed. The ferry service from Manhattan is located next to the Staten Island ferry terminal and starts operating at 1000 am.... More

Would really recommend this to groups of all ages. Take a bike or a surrey around the island and take time for the exhibits. A great day out

What an amazing place! You take a ferry ride from lower NYC (Adults are $2 roundtrip, kids are free) and then you are in a huge park with incredible views of lower NYC, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty! You can rent bikes, have a picnic lunch and you can even take a nap in hammock park! It's a shame... More

Great way to get away from the city. Lots of events, etc there. Peaceful, and a 10 minute ferry ride from Manhattan.

If you want to escape the hubbub of the city it's easy. Get on the very reasonably priced and short ferry ride (next to Staten Island Ferries) to Governors Island and spend a peaceful day in tranquility. The National Park Service does tours of Castle William which of course is free. Colonels Row and Liggett Terrace are beautiful tree lined... More

Between the 2 ways to catch the ferry , Manhattan or Brooklyn, we chose Brooklyn. We figured it was better to look for a parking spot in Brooklyn than Manhattan. I've never been to that part of Brooklyn so I didn't know what to expect. Busier than I thought. Luckily we got a spot right across the street from Pier... More

I used to live on Governor's Island in the early 1980's - when it was a functioning Coast Guard Base. I have many many fond childhood memories of this place. It was literally an oasis in the middle of the "madness" of New York City. The families that lived on the Island could escape the hubbub of the city. It... More
