The guides on the farm are family members, living close to the farm, they even look after the farm animals when the farm is closed. Very knowledgeable and we even got to try some corn cakes, fresh off the cast iron skillet! Feeding the chickens was great and watching Charlie the ox plow the field was a lot of fun. More

Wife and I really enjoyed this lovely attraction and look forward to taking the Grandkids there next time. As a non-profit the relatively small entrance fee goes to continue to restore and improve this historical gem, not line someone's pockets, which is even better. The people are dressed in period clothing and take the time to share their considerable knowledge... More

Island Farm is a really fun, affordable farm where characters walk around in period costume. You'll have fun meandering while the kids will love the cows, horses, and sheep that they can see, smell, and pet. More

I went with several family members in early November. It was nice to be able to tour the farm without many other tourists there. The farm reminds me of a very small Colonial Williamsburg. The interpreters were all nice and most seemed to have a detailed knowledge about what went when it was an actual working farm. They have done... More

My parents live on the OBX and we often visit them. We have been to The Island Farm twice, and both times it has been fantastic. I am something of a connoisseur of historic sites, and this one is top notch. The curator is very knowledgeable, as are the other docents. The docents are all in period clothing and man... More

A very interesting look—via reconstructed buildings and live reenactments/demonstrations/lectures—at what life was like generally and, in particular, what life was like for a relatively prosperous farmer before the Civil War. From beginning to end staff members were very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and friendly. We spent close to two hours here, listening to the re-enactors and looking around. We came without children,... More

I visited Island Farm together with my four daughters (6 years down to 9 months) and my wife and mother-in-law. We've visited a lot of living history museums, and this was probably the best. It was very interactive, with a lot of things to touch and do. The interpreters were great, especially the lady in the kitchen, who helped the girls... More

Beautiful place!! Lots to see,. touch and do. Make sure you take the ox cart ride with Charlie the Ox. I don't know of any other place that a family can do that. Island Farm is a nice break from all the commerical attractions at the beach - something our kids will remember and go back and visit again next... More

Our whole family enjoyed our visit to the Island Farm. The kids (ages 1 and 3) enjoyed all the animals, especially feeding the chickens and horse. The staff has done a great job of making you feel like you have stepped back in time. Everyone was very friendly and talked to us a lot. We enjoyed sweet potato cakes freshly... More

If good living history farms are your thing, Island Farm is just the place for you. It is small, but the managers know what they're doing in both historical reproductions and interpretation. I visited at the Christmas program and not only were the costumes on the interpreters outstanding (authenticity-wise), but the historical stories told were sophisticated and historically accurate for...
