This review is for the visitor center only because that is all we had time to visit. This facility is new and pretty high tech. The interactive exhibits on nature are great. My young kids really like the molds of the different types of animal doo doo, especially seeing a mold of bear dung. You learn about the different animals... More

Spouse & I took a guided kayak tour (via Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head) a few yrs back & had lots of fun. Went in the late spring & even 'tho we were the only 2 people to show up for the trip, the guide said "Sure, let's go!" Our 2-hr scheduled trip ended up being closer to 4... More

Had a great, although too short a time driving around the refuge. Maps are terrific so you can plan your route and, if you are like me and are seeing it on the way to an ultimate destination, also plan your time. Saw bear scat and met a fellow who gave me directions to where he saw 2 bears in... More

Came here with no expectations. I read the reviews here before going and sort of hoped to see a bear. We went in the afternoon which may have been why I didn't see any. But the drive is nice and I did see some herons and a lot of turtles.

We visited on a gloomy afternoon and drove through the refuge. We saw lots of turtles and a few birds but that we the extent. One couple stopped us and told us that on previous trips they had seen black bear, red wolf and a boar and her baby. We were not that fortunate. I will say that the weather... More

We came here on night to do the red wolf howling and got eaten up by mosquitos even with bug repellent. This place might be good in the daylight but late in the day and evening it is really bad. The red wolf howling was boring also. I was excited to do it and then I wished I had not... More

We went to walk along the trails to see what we could find, however, they must have recently had rain as some of the one trail was muddy. We decided to turn around and check out the driving tour instead. Luckily while driving along, we saw a bear, so we sat in the car awhile, watched & took pictures. It... More

If you get to the refuge before the sun comes up, you will see so much wildlife! Especially bears! My last visit I saw more than 20 bears as they were returning to the woods after their morning jaunts. If you don't see the animals, just take in the shear beauty of the area. Sunrises are fabulous and the butterflies... More

Came here on a whim - expecting trails. Probably amazing with a canoe/kayak. After about an hour of driving, we called it quits. Next time we'll prepare to enjoy this place

All the reviews we read got us excited for wildlife but the most we saw was a couple of turtles. The roads were hard to navigate, we wondered if we were lost a couple of times. I'm sad we didn't get to see anything :(
