I have always wanted to see a bear in the wild and so far I haven't driven through Alligator River without seeing a bear. I'd give Alligator River an excellent rating but I have a few concerns. I visited twice. The first time I saw a dead bear, the second time we saw a dying cub who had just been... More

I will not repeat myself extolling the virtues of the paved wheelchair-accessible trail with a mobile guide. Tripadvisor will show my previous reviews of the place. I will repeat myself saying that I never saw bears there. The idea is to drive in, looking for a field where bears like to feed. The best spot (shown on one of the... More

We have only driven through here briefly on our way to the Outer Banks. We never saw a bear except for once but this was south of the refuge on 264 near Swan Quarter. We were on our way home from the OBX one night and barely side swiped a bear thar came out of the pitch black night and... More

Saw a few bears. Went after dinner. Saw most bears after dusk. Easy to find. Very muddy! My family really enjoyed searching for the different wildlife. Well worth the drive.

We drove to the park at 5:30pm with a goal specifically to see bears. We saw a few alligators and turtles right at the entrance. We also saw a few Osprey and owls during the drive. But of course we came for the bears. And sure enough we saw several. 1 standing next to road, 1 in tree next to... More

We went to the visitor center near the Elizabethan Gardens at 5pm. It was closed. I was confused, because I had read reviews of folks saying they had viewed the bears near sunset. So I called the next day and learned that the actual refuge (where the bears are) was about 15 miles away from the visitors center. The lady... More

We drove around the refuge after doing a kayak tour on the Alligator River, starting around 6:00 pm. We saw one deer, and two black bears along the wildlife drive. Then, following a review here on TripAdvisor, we turned onto Bear Road. We saw 17 black bears in the field along this gravel road! I can't imagine what is growing... More

A little hard to find but worth the visit. The Visitor Center is new and very nice with lots of exhibits for all ages. They usually host a gallery for local artists as well. We didn't have the time to explore the trails but I can see it would be worth the visit.

Been going to the outer banks for years but didn't know this preserve existed. We went on an evening ride, on our own, through the preserve right around sunset. We saw 6, my daugher insists 7, bears. There were a family of 4 foraging in a field, and a few others in the road. We did see one that stood... More

We drove for a few hours in all the wrong places. We finally went to Bear road at about 730pm and wow what a sight probably about 30 bears walking through the field. It was truly a memorably experience!
