Did not see any alligators and no other animals either but they had a great walking trail and boardwalk and we did see different birds along the way. Tried fishing but no fish either. Still a beautiful walk and love the outdoors

My wife wants to see bears and alligators but apparently it's off season for the bears and alligators as well. The drive around was kinda fun though and we just had a nice time driving around enjoying the peace and tranquillity. It's free, so if you enjoy nature, this will be a good place to visit. The roads can be... More

Nice place to take your time and drive around. Stop at the nearby visitor's center to get a map of the refuge, so you have some idea of where you want to go. I like the water areas. It's interesting and fun to drive along the many roads, slowly, looking for wildlife. This trip some of the sights were, two... More

We were returning to Raleigh from the OBX, and just past the Stumpy Point turnoff, about 5:30 PM, we stopped to try fishing in the waters alongside the highway. I had a few worms & light fresh water gear. First worm brought in a fish in 5 seconds! Got more Mosquito bites than fish bites, but in 45 minutes took... More

Went on the sunset/night van tour of the refuge during the Wings over Water Wildlife Festival Week. There was a fee for this tour as the refuge is not usually open at night but there is no fee if you go on your own during the day. It is a refuge so they tell you up front that you may... More

We use a small parking lot off US64 as the launch base for incursions into the Alligator River. Can't speak for kayaking at the place as we go either on foot or by car. Apart from the parking lot the amenities include a port-a-potty, some trash cans and a board with maps and hunting license applications. Off the parking lot... More

We decided to give this place a try and were not disappointed. We only checked out the half mile Sandy Ridge Trail, but what a gem. Beautiful.

Weather-wise, our tram ride was a little cool. Our guide did tell us that there was a very good possibility that we would not see any wildlife, due to the fact that this is a refuge, not a zoo. She was right--- all we saw was animals that we could see at home--- turtles & birds & butterflies. However, we... More

We went first to the National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center on Roanoke Island, just past the town of Manteo, across from the entrance to the Elizabethan Gardens. It was very quiet and I spent a long time talking to the very nice volunteer there. She told me the guided bear drives led by a ranger stopped the last week in... More

Did the tram ride today at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Cindy our guide did an excellent job. The tram ride is a 3 hour program and it is very educational and informative. While you are not guaranteed to see any wildlife, you most likely will. Even though we did not see any bear, we did see a turtle,... More
