We went to the visitor center near the Elizabethan Gardens at 5pm. It was closed. I was confused, because I had read reviews of folks saying they had viewed the bears near sunset. So I called the next day and learned that the actual refuge (where the bears are) was about 15 miles away from the visitors center. The lady... More

We drove around the refuge after doing a kayak tour on the Alligator River, starting around 6:00 pm. We saw one deer, and two black bears along the wildlife drive. Then, following a review here on TripAdvisor, we turned onto Bear Road. We saw 17 black bears in the field along this gravel road! I can't imagine what is growing... More

A little hard to find but worth the visit. The Visitor Center is new and very nice with lots of exhibits for all ages. They usually host a gallery for local artists as well. We didn't have the time to explore the trails but I can see it would be worth the visit.

Been going to the outer banks for years but didn't know this preserve existed. We went on an evening ride, on our own, through the preserve right around sunset. We saw 6, my daugher insists 7, bears. There were a family of 4 foraging in a field, and a few others in the road. We did see one that stood... More

We drove for a few hours in all the wrong places. We finally went to Bear road at about 730pm and wow what a sight probably about 30 bears walking through the field. It was truly a memorably experience!

The rangers and interns were very nice and had hands on examples and exercises for kids as well as adults. Loved it - it did get alittle long winded though - kids got antsy after an hour of talk....then we went on the caravan out to hear the howling of the wolves...saw bears on the way...and liked the wolves too!!

Drove the trail around 5:30pm and saw 2 bears in an hour- both along the edge of the forest and canal. Look for berries along the road - chances are you will see something. Awesome drive!! Worth the visit:)

Nice kayak trails. Off the beaten track. Day we went it was 100 and sunny. Mosquitos were a bit hungry. Would be much nicer on a cooler day. Porta potties at put in.
