We've stopped here for years. The walk down to the bottom of the falls, the best place, is not very good for the very old or very young, but there are nice places near the top for viewing. We have many family pictures taken through the years with the falls in the background.

This was a beautiful hike. About 6 miles RT. You ascend about 1700 ft to an altitude of almost 4000 ft at the summit. Steep and dangerous at the top... not for small kids or those with little stamina. Absolutely beautiful view at the top though and the hike itself is lovely and quiet.

This is actually in Brevard, NC in the Pisgah National Forest. It is a tough 3+ mile hike up to the summit but not so difficult older children can't make it. Just be sure to bring water. One of the "must-do" hikes in WNC. The view from the top is great, but the climb is ceaselessly up-hill. Not for children or people out of shape. Saw my first huge rattler at the top. Figure a couple of hours to reach the top.

The best thing about this hike destination is that it's trailhead is right next to US Highway 276 which runs through the middle of Pisgah National Forest between Brevard, NC and Waynesville, NC.
