We used to go to Great Falls for picnics when I was a small child. I have such fond memories of it. We moved away almost 50 years ago, and I was excited to have the chance to go back. The rangers said it has changed a lot since then. I am sure it has. From the high water mark... More

I love this place. Great views and nice trails that are fun. There are lots of tables for picnics. Sometimes there is a line of cars to get in but it's worth it.

We recommend the River Trail, including its three overlooks. Believe the warnings about long lines behind the sole entrance booth. Enter early in the morning to avoid the lines; then leave early. Only a few hours are needed to experience park. You can also park at the county River Bend park and walk south into Great Falls.

We took a walk along the river and the canal on a beautiful early spring day. The place was crowded with people but very manageable. The natural waterway was lovely and full.

It took us an hour to drive the 0.8 miles from Georgetown Pike to the Park entrance at 4PM Easter Sunday, very slow moving single lane traffic getting into the park. Bottleneck was the entrance, and there was no warning about delays and the telephone number on the nps website was not working. Navigation and maps had no delay information... More

Missed by most tourists, this park, about fifteen miles out of D.C. features the Potomac River roaring over rocky bluffs into pools. On weekends, daring kayakers plunge over the precipices. Nearby are the remnants of the canal built by George Washington and others to provide a means for barges to bypass the falls. A museum features a film on its... More

Our friends from the local area suggested that the park would be worth a visit. It was indeed a nice low-cost outing - $5 for parking. We began with the interesting visitor center that described the history and geography of the area, the birth and death of the canal, including many warnings about the dangerous nature of the turbulent river... Love coming here. Can't wait for the spring to really come and bring foliage with it. I enjoy just watching the waterfalls and see the river rushing by. When we went, we hiked around for a long time and had a nice picnic. I highly recommend a visit--romantic or otherwise!

If you're looking for a place for hiking, picnic or just a stroll, this is the right place. You can bring grandparents, small children, teens and even your dog! We went unfortunately on a hot day but we all had fun.

My wife grew up near this park, and she loved it so much that we had our wedding there. There are miles of park to explore and if you like hiking or a novice it is right for you. There are some place to rock climb and if you are a thrill seeker ther are the rapids to go down!
