I took 4 energetic kids on the portion of the trail below Turkey Run Park one hot Washington, DC day. That part of the trail is almost entirely shaded and there is a breeze once you get down to the water--big plusses on a humid DC day. The trail did get a bit narrow which caused some concern about poison... More

I went there on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, when the great weather and Rolling Thunder brought out crowds of people at all the major attractions. And, I hiked for almost an hour before I saw another person. It's great to get so far away from everyone at a place so convenient to the Beltway. Recommend that a first-time... More

Track the Potomac for almost 5 miles on this trail for a magnificent experience. It follows the south bank of the river in and around the flora and fauna that the water nourishes. The trail can be reached from a number of points (Roosevelt Island, Turkey Run Park) to shorten the distance if needed although the entire route is worth... More

This was a great trail for hiking and biking. We took our kids and they really enjoyed them selves. I enjoyed the scenic views of the Potomac. Many people were out, but it wasnt too crowded.

We started at Turkey Run Park and ended in Theodore Roosevelt Island, it took us 4.5 hrs with time for photos and lunch. I completely enjoyed all the hike. The trail is most of the time by the river with excellent view of OGU and the Chain and Key Bridge. Highly recommend it. OBS. Bathrooms just in Roosevelt Island.

This trail, which communicates with several others, offers a remarkable variety of flora along the river as well as landscapes that range from gentle and flat to rocky and from dry to wet. Wonderful close in hiking. Spring ephemerals especially lovely- trout lily, spring beauty, trillium, bluebells, pawpaw in flower, Dutchman's breeches, squirrel corn.

Amazing the US decided to leave this stretch of the shore of the Potomac for recreation and inspiration rather than real estate development and exploitation. What foresight! It is rugged in parts, especially between Spout run and chain Bridge- but a wonderful place to explore. Bring a picnic and water and your camera. Great for fishing too!

There is a terrific section of the Potomac Heritage trail that runs directly under the American Legion Bridge. It can be reached from marked steps on the left side of Live Oak Drive in Mclean where there is parking for 3-4 cars. To get there exit 495 at Georgetown Pike towards DC and turn left at the first light on... More

The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail runs for miles along the Potomac River. This review is for the trail in Fairfax County (Virginia) close to Washington, DC, where segments of the trail traverse Fairfax County parkland and the Great Falls National Park. Great Falls National Park has a $5 admission fee for cars and motorcycles that is good for 3... More

The weather was perfect. The trails were woodsy, and there was much to see while hiking here.
