Canyonlands looks like an extension of the Grand Canyon without the crowds. It is unbelievable the views that you will see. It is a must for the Moab area.

This park was beautiful. The colors and rock formations were beautiful. Would have liked to go back at night and seen the stars.
Many very nice canyon views. After awhile they get a bit repititious. We stopped at about four overlooks which took several hours and that was enough. Volunteers at the visitor's center were helpful in suggesting places to stop, trails to take, lenght of trails, etc.Maps distributed at entrance were good. Bring the map to the visitor's center so the guides...

Out of the way, and secluded. Scenic and pretty especially with light from sun down. We were in the Needles area, and enjoyed the Elephant Hill hike. Also, make shure you stop at the Petroglyphs, on you way to the entrance.
I went on a 6 day, 5 night, rafting trip down the Colorado from Potash to Hite Marina in Utah. The trip organiser was O.A.R.S. and the section of river traveled was Cataract Canyon. The trip was well organised and the river guides were extremely knowledgeable about the geology, history, and flora of the area and were also skilled and...

Island in the Sky portion of Canyonland is beautiful and worth a half-day's time. Some nice shorter hikes, check out Mesa Arch, Upheaval Dome Viewpoints, and Grand View Rim Trail. Amazing views throughout! Could not find the trailhead to False Kiva!!!! (ARGH!!)
I called only at the Eastern Visitor Centre. It is quite a way from the IS 191. The staff were very helpful in suggesting what to see in a short visit. It's probably worth a day visit to begin to explore a large park.
Canyonlands NP is much larger that I realized. It is segmented into several districts, and a 4X4 is required to get to some areas. We visited the Island in the Sky, and the Needles areas. Both are unique and different from each other. We did some hiking in both areas, but it was very warm while we were visiting, so...

We found the Island in the Sky section to be the most accessible and interesting. You can tour it in half a day if tight on time. Unless you are a climber, I recommend a jetboat cruise to view the Needles section of the park. The drive from Route 191 on Utah 313 to access the park was truly scenic...

What a beautiful park! The cost to enter was $10/car, valid for a week. Our favorites were the Mesa Arch and Grand View Point hikes.
We had kids ranging from 9 months to 12 years old, and these hikes were well-suited for them. Mesa Arch is a really quick hike with an arch at the end.
The Grand View Point...
