Wow! Who remembers 11 Nike missile bases around the San Francisco Area! Well they were there from 1954 through 1974. Incredible - Fort Funston is one of the remnants of that cold war area. That is surely some food for thought. Today Fort Funston is a wonderful park on the cliffs overlooking the incredible Pacific Ocean. It is a favorite... More

Few places rev the engine of our nature loving, dog adoring family like Fort Funston. A favorite from a decade ago with my tri-colored larger than life dog Henry who walked with me alone up and down the beach, and then off to Weinerschnitzel on the way home for lunch. Now I take my husband, two kids and sweet lab-border... More

We have gone to Fort Funston several times; this time I visited a small dog greeted me as I exited my car. That was so cute. Both people and dogs love the views here as well as the hiking trails. When we arrived it was early in the day mid week this time. Parking was no problem and quickly found... More

When the wind is right, hang gliders can be seen endlessly floating along the cliff along the ocean. If you haven't seen it before, it's one of the cool things to see in San Francisco. If you're a local, it's apparently the ultimate place to walk your dog.

I visited this beach with a friend and her new pup. It's dog heaven - and people heaven too if you like dogs (which I do). The topography is breathtaking - the cliffs dropping off onto the beach - that alone is worth the visit. It's also the first beach I've been to where I've ever seen actual sand dollars!... More

Another favorite area of SF in the SW corner of the city. Great walking areas among the old gun bunkers of the fort. This is a dog walking haven and the hang gliders will also go off the cliffs. Like to walk down to the beach area (sandy step path by hang gliding field) where you can have a great... More

This is pure heaven for dogs! Open running space amongst the dunes and beach, dogs of all breeds and sizes, off leash....did you hear me? Off leash except for the professional dog walkers with a half dozen to a dozen dogs that might take it safe and keep the wanderers under control by leash. We were told that many dog... More

I don’t hike here; did it once and found it rather bland. But I do like to visit and sit and watch the hang gliders launch and cruise up and down the coast. It’s a very relaxing way to spend some time contemplating. Bring a jacket as it’s nearly always windy there (hence the hang gliders).

I start laughing as soon as I arrive at FF. there is every breed of dog imaginable. I like the weekdays w/ the dog walkers there. Numerous dogs all together & everyone is well behaved. All the doggies are so cute, great exercise too for us, you can walk down a big sand hill to the beach below, turn left... More
