A reader's joy

Another great SF bookstore. Lots of fiction from other countries, some I've been looking for for a long time. Great stop! Lots of books bought and sent home.

We stopped in The Booksmith while visiting the Haight-Asbury neighborhood. It's a cute little shop with interesting items and books for sale. It was late in the evening an hour before closing... we were the only customers. As my 20 yr old daughter made a purchase I knowingly sat on a seat in the middle of the store next to... More

While browsing this lovely shop yesterday we looked up to see another patron, dressed only in a baseball hat and a sock (use your imagination) enter the store. Now, having seen a lot in SF over our visit, I believe we can now say we've seen it all! Well almost all (thankfully). A later Google search by our 15 year... More

Love the personal reviews all over the store on the shelves. Friendly staff and open late. Will definitely go back.

This is a perfect bookstore: not too large, not too small, not too radical, not too straight, friendly to all ages. Great staff with great taste. And a perfect escape from the touristy Haight.

Finally somewhere with more books than junk (hear me B&N). Great shop to discover new authors, enjoy some staff recommendations, or just talk the joy of reading with the staff. A book lover's jewel in the Haight.

This is one of my favorite businesses in the Haight. Clean, good stock, and helpful staff. I live in the neighborhood and stop by frequently. They're happy to special order for you and I've spent a lot of time just browsing. I'm a big fan of independent bookstores and The Booksmith is one of the best.

Hot off of visiting Powell's in Portland the day before, I thought I would continue my dreamy I-want-to-live-in-a-bookstore adventure and go to The Booksmith. So, maybe my expectations were a little high, but The Booksmith only partially delivered. I can spend hours in bookstores and really did not feel that kind of nestling-in feeling I usually get surrounded by that... More

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
