The end of my search for Pliny the Elder - Overhyped and overcrowded, but makes up for it with the beer selection

I love craft beer. Ever since I've turned 21, I've heard cries of "Michelle, you NEED to try Pliny the Elder!". I don't even like IPAs and people were still blindly recommending this beer that's so hard to get your hands on (people stand in line at grocery stores to buy it and it sells out within an hour). You... More

Perfect bar, Marvelous post-college ambiance with an OK mix of boys and girls. The bar is covered head to toe with beer taps and beer memorabilia. Felt safe unless you tried to order a mixed drink.. Just kidding. No food, nothing but beer. They have about 40 on tap. Correction, they also had pelegrino water, and red bull. We ended... More

I was on a family vacation in San Francisco, and strong armed my son-in-law into taking me here one afternoon. It was everything I hoped it would be. Great beers, of course, but also the perfect dive bar ambience. If you don't waste the bartender's time, or mess with the formidable bouncer, it's also a perfectly friendly experience.

My wife and I are huge fans of craft beer, so we were looking for several craft brews we cannot get in Minnesota, particularly the Russian River Brewing Co beers (Pliny the Elder, Blind Pig, Damnnation). Toronado had all 3 on draft and they were fantastic. The draft list was the best we seen on our trip to San Francisco.... More

This "dive bar" was a real find!! Recommended by a friend, we were quite worried about the look of the place. How wrong we were - a real gem - great beers, real local feel, amazing garment. I'm almost reluctant to recommend as I want to keep this all to myself!!!

Great bar and vibe, shame for the fat rude bouncer who could resemble silent bob,but to do a proper impression he should be SILENT. With his rudeness and arrogance he has been the only bullying experience here in California we experience in our trip. I advice a diet so to not refrain people from exiting the place while he is... Great selection of beer, authentic atmosphere, and close proximity to good sausages!! Be aware though.. It's cash only.

On Haight Street which is a neighborhood worth checking out. We stopped in to Toronado for a break from walking around and managed to try several beers among the four of us. There was an amazing selection.

Excellent craft beer selection, knowledgeable staff. Can understand why some people had problems, but provided you are sensible and polite they were perfectly fine to deal with. Would strongly recommend to any craft beer fanatic going to San Francisco! Nb. This review was ~8pm on a Saturday night for reference.

The place is nice. Awesome selection of great brews and reasonable prices. The only hitch is that the bartenders make seem that they are doing you a favor by going out of their way to pour you a beer.

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
